Have you looked at the aspect ratio used in projection matrices for these Wii games?
Incorrect assumption about pixel aspect?

Gamecube games were, by and large, more primitive graphically. You may not have had as many obvious cues, or may have been distracted by the more obviously faceted models. The Wii had just enough power to produce games that had semi-realistic graphics, wherein you're more likely to notice incorrect aspect. I actually tried a gamecube game myself, and it kinda looked squished, but I wasn't sure, so I didn't offer it as evidence. Anyway, they do use basically the same OS, and as I recall, the video hardware was not changed either, so I would actually expect them both to have these quirks. I just don't know for certain. If you have any games with a perfectly round object in them, that'd be the easiest way to tell. Take a screenshot, load it into an editor, measure width and height. If the width is about 6% more than the height, then you have an answer. (09-08-2013, 12:25 AM)delroth Wrote: Have you looked at the aspect ratio used in projection matrices for these Wii games?Nope. I'm not even aware of how to do that in Dolphin. Why do you ask? I'd expect one that looks correct in Dolphin, as it currently is, to have a pure 4:3 or 16:9 aspect (1.33333 or 1.77778) for NTSC. I'd expect one that was meant to compensate for the real hardware's quirks to have those numbers multiplied by ~.942, depending on just how well the engineer understood the hardware and how to compensate for it. 09-09-2013, 07:36 AM

As I'm also a programmer, I can mostly look past the unwarranted snark and disdain in the chat quoted to me above. I know perfectly well that almost all programmers are inordinately rude by nature and tend to burn bridges left and right for no apparent reason.
However... I still can't help you out with a confirmation, since neither of you actually told me how to confirm it. 09-09-2013, 04:11 PM

Maybe it's because they don't frequently interact with non-technical people. Anyway, regarding this aspect ratio issue, does it occur on other emulators as well? I didn't notice this issue on other emulators. Anyway, tbh I perfectly understand why people feel offended by such logs, but I don't see why everyone is blaming devs for that. But yeah, I guess complaining is easier than just accepting facts. EDIT: That said, I could've also just completely ignored this thread like most other devs have done. Instead I told the OP that the issue (if there is any at all) is unlikely to ever get addressed unless he proves any of his theories himself. But again, according to you it's probably better to just let threads die in silence. EDIT2: btw, let's not get too much off topic here - if you feel any desperate desire of further discussing this, take it to PM or create a forum thread in the site feedback section about it. 09-10-2013, 12:11 AM
Especially since the issue is not an issue. If developers render at a non standard aspect ratio to compensate for screens, fix the problem by using Dolphin on the intended type of screens.

Just for clarity, I didn't blame you. I responded to Jafo regarding what he said that "almost all programmers are inordinately rude by nature." |
