I think my main turn-off for SMG was the Wiimote. Now, Nintendo does know how to utilize it effectively, and each of the mechanics was fun. While they were enjoyable, it's just that I'd rather not use them if need be. One of the reasons I loved Dolphin so much was due to Emulated Wiimotes using my wired 360 or Logitech controller. Doesn't work 100% for every scenario, but it sufficed. I think that's why I actually finished Odyssey but only did SMG1 and 2 halfway on my Wii; I really, really, like using a "normal" controller. I haven't found the time to play SMG on my PC, but maybe one of these days. Controls were never game-breaking, annoying, or hard to deal with on my Wii, it's just that Wiimotes are not my preferred controllers (Skyward Sword being a huge exception).
Everything else about the game was spot-on for me. I don't come in with high expectations for a Mario game though. I just want to run and jump, and the worlds need to be colorful and interesting. I played SM64 to death as a kid (ditto for the DS version), but I don't really use it as the baseline comparison for modern 3D Mario games.
