The game seems to have gotten some really good reviews, so i guess im in the minority....?
- Theres constant dialoge interrupting you, with some star-people telling you how to play the game
- Using the wiimote as a mousepointer to click on things in a super mario game just feels wrong.
- In super mario 64, you would enter a gameworld with a full-sized 3D environment that you could explore with mario. In super mario galaxy, you shoot through the galaxy and land on tiny little platforms scattered across the galaxy. Im not a big fan of that.
You're kidding right? Super Mario Galaxy is one of the best games ever made. You know what is even better than Super Mario Galaxy? Yes! Super Mario Galaxy 2!
You should really give it a try and continue a bit further.
To answer on your points of disappointment:
- The intro of the game is pretty scene and dialogue heavy. But once you get the second star you have basically seen 90% of the mandatory scenes. Just with growls from Bowser occasionally and the ending sequence (which is pretty lengthy, but amazing). A few short sentences from a few characters as well during stars, such as the Bee Queen wanting you to scratch her back. Rosalina's Storybook is completely optional if you don't want more scenes (a simple story, but very touching), you can always talk to some of the Toads and resident of the Galaxies you come across... And well.. There is sometimes the mandatory short tutorial, mostly from the black Luma. But if that's too much dialogue, you won't need to fair for more in Super Mario Galaxy 2, which shortens down on all parts of the story (since the story in the first game was pretty meager). In fact Super Mario Galaxy 2 wants you to dive into the platforming action much quicker.
- You should try using the Mouse + Keyboard instead, which is a perfect fit for Super Mario Galaxy, even better than the WiiMote + Nunchuk. The precision is amazing at which you pick up starbits. Plus, the mousepointer actually is your mouse itself.
- Yeah... You got to love it or not. It is not all that bad. It is certainly no Super Mario 64, Sunshine or Odyssey by offering you open worlds where you can go around. Certainly no Banjo-Kazooie or Donkey Kong 64 either. Both Super Mario Galaxy are linear, and I mean really linear, just as linear as Super Mario 3D Land / World if you played those. There are quite a bit of area's which have these smaller planet-like area's where gravity goes all around you. But there are also more of the traditional area's which are larger (and where gravity kills you if you jump of the area). The second galaxy (Honeybee) for example offers some larger area's. The tutorial and first major galaxy (which there are 15 off, plus a lot of minor galaxies) are pretty focused on the smaller gravity-based area's. You will notice a mix between both type of area's quite often, even to the extent of blending in with another. Super Mario Galaxy 2 goes even further by having way more galaxies, and I mean waaaaaaaay more. No single star lets you run through the same thing twice.
Both games are good, really good, and I mean reeeeaaaaaallly good. And the soundtrack is amazing too, if not one of Nintendo finest. Really, give it a try. It seems you gave up playing during the first galaxy. The heavy dialogue really gets reduced insanely after you are about a hour far.
I think the biggest issue people have is the linearity of the games, unlike the open structure of Super Mario 64 and Sunshine. Linearity isn't a bad thing, since it can provide a very well designed experience, but at the same time it also prevents creativity in how to approach a mission. You either hate or love it.
Super Mario Galaxy really defined how platformers should raise the bar for creative level design. But I really like Super Mario 64 of course too... Pff... Hard choices, which one is better? Sunshine is obviously the worst entry, but it is pretty fun as well. Now... Super Mario Odyssey, when I finally get to play it, that would promise an insanely blast of a time for me. It might be the best Mario game ever made? I dunno, I am eager to discover that.
