I just got this game, and i was really looking forward to play it for the first time, but im a bit disappointed already.
  • Theres constant dialoge interrupting you, with some star-people telling you how to play the game.
  • Using the wiimote as a mousepointer to click on things in a super mario game feels wrong.
  • In super mario 64, you would enter a gameworld with a full-sized 3D environment that you could explore as mario. In super mario galaxy, you shoot through a galaxy and land on tiny little platforms. Im not a big fan of that.
The game seems to have gotten some really good reviews, so i guess im in the minority?

Here's a video I really like that razzadoop made about how he doesn't like the game:

Good video. I complete agree with his points.

I still think that super mario 64 is the best mario game of all time. Super mario sunshine was pretty fun as well.

You're kidding right? Super Mario Galaxy is one of the best games ever made. You know what is even better than Super Mario Galaxy? Yes! Super Mario Galaxy 2!

You should really give it a try and continue a bit further.

To answer on your points of disappointment:
  • The intro of the game is pretty scene and dialogue heavy. But once you get the second star you have basically seen 90% of the mandatory scenes. Just with growls from Bowser occasionally and the ending sequence (which is pretty lengthy, but amazing). A few short sentences from a few characters as well during stars, such as the Bee Queen wanting you to scratch her back. Rosalina's Storybook is completely optional if you don't want more scenes (a simple story, but very touching), you can always talk to some of the Toads and resident of the Galaxies you come across... And well.. There is sometimes the mandatory short tutorial, mostly from the black Luma. But if that's too much dialogue, you won't need to fair for more in Super Mario Galaxy 2, which shortens down on all parts of the story (since the story in the first game was pretty meager). In fact Super Mario Galaxy 2 wants you to dive into the platforming action much quicker.
  • You should try using the Mouse + Keyboard instead, which is a perfect fit for Super Mario Galaxy, even better than the WiiMote + Nunchuk. The precision is amazing at which you pick up starbits. Plus, the mousepointer actually is your mouse itself.
  • Yeah... You got to love it or not. It is not all that bad. It is certainly no Super Mario 64, Sunshine or Odyssey by offering you open worlds where you can go around. Certainly no Banjo-Kazooie or Donkey Kong 64 either. Both Super Mario Galaxy are linear, and I mean really linear, just as linear as Super Mario 3D Land / World if you played those. There are quite a bit of area's which have these smaller planet-like area's where gravity goes all around you. But there are also more of the traditional area's which are larger (and where gravity kills you if you jump of the area). The second galaxy (Honeybee) for example offers some larger area's. The tutorial and first major galaxy (which there are 15 off, plus a lot of minor galaxies) are pretty focused on the smaller gravity-based area's. You will notice a mix between both type of area's quite often, even to the extent of blending in with another. Super Mario Galaxy 2 goes even further by having way more galaxies, and I mean waaaaaaaay more. No single star lets you run through the same thing twice.

Both games are good, really good, and I mean reeeeaaaaaallly good. And the soundtrack is amazing too, if not one of Nintendo finest. Really, give it a try. It seems you gave up playing during the first galaxy. The heavy dialogue really gets reduced insanely after you are about a hour far.

I think the biggest issue people have is the linearity of the games, unlike the open structure of Super Mario 64 and Sunshine. Linearity isn't a bad thing, since it can provide a very well designed experience, but at the same time it also prevents creativity in how to approach a mission. You either hate or love it.

Super Mario Galaxy really defined how platformers should raise the bar for creative level design. But I really like Super Mario 64 of course too... Pff... Hard choices, which one is better? Sunshine is obviously the worst entry, but it is pretty fun as well. Now... Super Mario Odyssey, when I finally get to play it, that would promise an insanely blast of a time for me. It might be the best Mario game ever made? I dunno, I am eager to discover that.

I was kinda disappointed about Galaxy too. The controls, even if they are still very well done like every Mario game, are a bit limp, floaty, not very dynamic, less technical than 64. The beginning of the game is very slow, easy and cute. I loved Galaxy 2, more dynamic and hardcore.

Odyssey is really excellent, the only 3D Mario that I can really compare with 64.
From France with love.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 expects you to have played the previous game, as it ramps up the difficulty much sooner and goes even higher from there, with some of the challenges being insanely difficult (comet stars in the the spoiler world).

Yeah, the first Super Mario Galaxy definitely is much easier and more linear. The second game is linear too, but starts to use huger and flat environments more frequently. The hardest challenges from Super Mario Galaxy obviously are the the three Green Star Trials (which can be accessed by collecting the famed Green Stars) and the Comet Stars. You also unlock Purple Comet Stars once you have beaten the game, but sadly half of them are fairly easy with the often half ranking from hard to insane. But for the most part, most stars are a breeze. Don't except that you can just waltz through Super Mario Galaxy 2 just as easily, even for the normal Power Stars. It is also a lengthier adventure than before.

You could technically skip straight to the second game if you want to get into the game immediately (no story and such) and want to game to be harder right from the bat, but... You would miss out on some solid learning experience. Also, the first game is still worth playing through. I really love the first game, but the second game even more (because of the immediate platforming action and lack of handholding).

I think my main turn-off for SMG was the Wiimote. Now, Nintendo does know how to utilize it effectively, and each of the mechanics was fun. While they were enjoyable, it's just that I'd rather not use them if need be. One of the reasons I loved Dolphin so much was due to Emulated Wiimotes using my wired 360 or Logitech controller. Doesn't work 100% for every scenario, but it sufficed. I think that's why I actually finished Odyssey but only did SMG1 and 2 halfway on my Wii; I really, really, like using a "normal" controller. I haven't found the time to play SMG on my PC, but maybe one of these days. Controls were never game-breaking, annoying, or hard to deal with on my Wii, it's just that Wiimotes are not my preferred controllers (Skyward Sword being a huge exception).

Everything else about the game was spot-on for me. I don't come in with high expectations for a Mario game though. I just want to run and jump, and the worlds need to be colorful and interesting. I played SM64 to death as a kid (ditto for the DS version), but I don't really use it as the baseline comparison for modern 3D Mario games.

Super Mario Galaxy was the first 3D Mario I played (I should have begun with Super Mario Sunshine, but I only did it a few months ago). It stills one of my favorite, with only Super Mario Odyssey who got first in line. Even haven't playing previous 3D Mario games (the only platformers I played before were Scooby-Doo! Night of 100 frights which was... really tideous, and Crash Bandicoot Wrath of Cortex who was a nightmare for a time), I found Mario to be really fast easy to control, even for triple-jump or Somersaults.
Also I need to say that I GOD-DAMN LOVE SPACE. Well, even if it's absolutely not realistic, I loved how you needed to play with the different planets and their gravitation, see the other-side and find secrets hidden there...
Yeah the second one was difficult. It took me hundreds of tries (maybe more than a thousand, not joking) to complete the very last star, saying how insanely difficult this one was...

Comparing to SM64 and Sunshine, which are really great games, not saying the opposite of course. But I really had a lot of trouble trying to handle Mario correctly. The firsts secret levels of Sunshine (the ones without Fludd), I raged so much because I was unable to get used to the little differences in gameplay, being really used to handling Mario in Super Mario Galaxy and later games...

Is it just me or does the movement feel a bit sluggish in super mario galaxy?
