And you really think melee would have survived with as many players as it does for 17 years and is arguably growing, looking at entrants numbers for tournaments without Dolphin netplay?
It's all bullshit anyway since they have specifically anti-dolphin code. It's not like it doesn't work on Dolphin. They made it not work on Dolphin.

Maybe it wouldn't be growing (since Dolphin let's more people connect than physical hardware), but we'd still have a dedicated group doing tourneys (probably on a country by country basis). It's still a popular game even without netplay, so people were going be playing it for years anyway, not unlike arcade fighters that continually get a bunch of participants and publicity. We can definitely argue over size, and I agree that Dolphin was and is instrumental to pushing the numbers where they are today, but I think Melee would still have been relevant no matter what.
