You all should be thinking about future proofing. Intel i9 9900K will be perfect for RPCS3 and future emulators where the consoles have 6+ cores. I'm certainly getting it.

We really aren’t at the point where we should be selling people $1000 CPU’s to play an emulator. 08-05-2018, 07:37 AM

Okay well then have fun trying to dump PS3 discs with a PC blu ray drive (I know i’ve tried, and it wasn’t very feasible).
If your focus is VR, I think it's more wise to save money by getting an i7-8700k or whatever high-end i7 they release on the next generation and invest those savings on a beefy GPU (which is waaay more important for VR performance than the CPU itself), maybe even an SLI. TBH, the 6 cores from the Coffee Lake i7 are already more than enough to emulation, even in recent emulators like RPCS3 (yes, many games still don't run full-speed, but that's more because of not emulated features and lack of optimizations than lack of CPU power, it should improve with time)...

GPU wise, I think that if the rumored gtx 1180+ is what I think it is, then that option is covered. But this is more in alignment with my reason for starting the thread, because I know the I7-8700k has a massive power boost to dolphin that my puny I5 could dare to dream. I'm just trying to get a good sense of whether the I9-9900k may be better or on par with it.
Be aware that for 'future proofing' - depending on how long you want things to last - it may be cheaper in the long run to buy a relatively midrange system with the expectation it'll be updated later - as the march of technology waits for no man, and you may end up with a faster system on average over the equivalent expected lifetime of a crazy high-end system. Certainly recently in CPUs (now there's actually some competition an 8th gen i3 can give the highest-end most expensive i7 from just a couple of years back a run for it's money.
This is especially when looking at top-tier 'halo' products - as the price increases a lot for a relatively modest improvement in performance. |
