I JUST WANT TO PLAY

I downloaded Dolphin 2 days ago, and have been trying to get my ps3 controller to work since then. I've read so many threads, watched youtube videos, tried so many things. Basically i got my controller configured how i want it. I know i am trying to use gamecube games, not wii games, I have port 1 set to standard controller, and the device is Input/0/PLAYSTATION®3 Controller. the little red dots light up when in configure but as soon as i try to play something the only button that actually works is L. I've tried refreshing the controller while the game is running, I've tried different games, I've completely reconfigured the controller, tried different controllers and reinstalled dolphin. Not once have i got past the intro screen.

How are you connecting the PS3 controller to your computer?
