I cant see the difference between 1080p and 4K?

Hello everyone,

I am going to buy a new pc to run dolphin on it. A friend of mine has a gamer pc and a 1440p monitor. So i visited him last week and he showed me some games ( Wind Waker and Kirby Air Ride).

The difference between IR 1x and 1080p is HUGE. But then he put it on 4K Resolution and yeah... I havent seen a difference at all? How comes that?

For e it is clear at the moment, that i wont buy a GTX 980 just to run games at 4k, when i see no difference at all, do you know what i mean?

Because 1440p is less than 4K? A monitor can't display a resolution that's higher than its own resolution.

Sorry for that, he also has an 4K Monitor. I mean that the difference from IR 1x to 1080p is higher than from 1080p to 4K.

Yes, I would assume you would reach a point of diminishing returns. I've never seen anything in 4K before, but I would imagine it's not nearly as much of an improvement as 480p to 1080p despite the larger difference in numbers.

1440p is only a few hundred pixels (dimensionally) more than 1080p and those pixels are tiny. So the difference really isn't all that noticable. When you change IR to 4k, dolphin sill scales it down across the 144p picture... The benefit here is that in theory the detail should result in a better picture, but in practice this seems to be hit or miss. AA seems a better option. But this varys widely game by game (and probably person by person). The recomendation is to use 4k in place of AA on games that benefit (the only way to know which look better on which game is to ctrast and compare.

There's not much of a noticeable difference when you play games that were designed to be in 480i/480p. When you play GTAV in 4K, that's a different story, because all the textures are made for 4K. If you get a 4K HD texture pack for Dolphin, then you will start noticing more differences.
For the most part, it's always best to render in the 4x or 8x AA for smooth edges and then choose the IR for how much your system can handle that particular game.

I can play Smash Bros Project M on 3x IR/8x AA, 4x IR/4x AA, and 5x IR/0x AA. In my opinion, 3x/8x looks the best, so it's all up to you and what your system can handle.

If you get the best graphics card you can, you will see great performance though. If you have the money, don't settle for something worst, especially if you want to play other games on it.

To see a difference you would need a game or video that actually outputs 4k graphics.

If you put a 1080 game on a 4K display, the game will still be 1080, it won't magically look better.

Also, the size of the monitor helps. If you have a 21 inch 4k monitor, then yeah, you won't really notice a big difference even if your game or movie is 4k.
