Cool, thanks guys. My laptop supports a bunch of SD cards, but I think Wii only takes SD or SDHC, so I will look for one of those at Best Buy today for around 16GB. Can't wait to start playing Xenoblade the way it was meant to be!
I am looking for a laptop that can play Dolphin at full speed on medium

Also, in case this offers anymore insight, I have a Sager NP9150 (with the i7 3610QM and 680M). When I was researching gaming laptops, almost everything I found said that CPU's weren't very important for PC gaming. I never expected I'd want to do something so CPU intensive, which is why I went with the base Ivy Bridge CPU for this machine. My understanding is that Sagers have very good cooling - dedicated fans and vents for both the CPU and GPU. I also have the the IC Diamond Thermal Compound paste on both, and will be using an aluminum cooling pad, so hopefully my CPU won't throttle from playing Xenoblade. I could upgrade the CPU to the 3720, but I just don't want to spend $300+ for what I believe will be only marginal improvements.
Also, when using the version of Dolphin with the HLE patch, will that give me an option to just use dual core as opposed to quad? Or would this be something I do elsewhere? I would like my CPU to be able to do 3.3 ghz if possible, I know it will only reach 3.1 ghz if all 4 cores are used. 09-22-2012, 03:07 AM

If you just lock threads to core dolphin should only use 2 of your core and so you should be able to turbo boost up to around 3.2Ghz. But if what you meant was LLE you can also lock that to a core. 09-24-2012, 11:34 PM
I'm thinking of upgrading my CPU (i7-3610qm), and am stuck between the 3720qm and the 3820qm. I know that The Last Story is basically a lost cause for full speed on laptops, but how would it run with a 3820qm? I can deal with some slowdown, as long as its playable. I'm finding Xenoblade Chronicles running very nicely on my 3610qm, and I feel like I can get it to run even better if I tweak the settings some more. I feel like I could be getting 4X res, but it slows down when I set it up that high.

The i7-3820QM is one of the fastest mobile Intel CPUs You'll need a very good cooling system in the laptop... Which laptop do you have got?

I have a Sager NP9150. It has two vents and two fans - one each for the CPU and GPU. I will also get thermal paste for the CPU, and I have a U3 Cooler Master to help out as well.
From what I gather, the NP9150's cooling system is very good! 09-25-2012, 01:30 AM
Ok, you should not have cooling problems with the i7-3820QM.
btw: More information about the i7-3820QM -> http://ark.intel.com/de/products/64889
CPU clockspeed won't reach 3.7GHz unless you run it in single core mode
With Dolphin , CPU should stay around 3.5-3.6GHz 500$ is not worth it since that CPU won't run The Last Story fullspeed anyway and 500$ cost as much as another laptop Even i5 3570k @ 4.2 can't run that game fullspeed all the time You should wait for haswell -> Ivy Bridge price will drop Nowaday , you can buy an old extreme edition i7 920XM for less than 200$ (It cost 1000$ before) Laptop: Mini PC :: 09-25-2012, 01:55 AM
Yeah I have to think about this. I'm also considering the 3720qm as well.
As you guys have said, The Last Story needs a desktop CPU to get full speed. But how would Xenoblade and The Last Story run on either the 3720 or 3820? I'm getting pretty good results now with the 3610qm, but it struggles when I go up to 4X res, and the sound can be a bit choppy during cutscenes (at 3X res). Would The Last Story be fairly playabe with a 3720 or 3820? If a 3720 will cut it (for now), I may just upgrade to that, and then maybe get a desktop next or something.
i7 3610QM : 3.1GHz(3/4 cores) - 3.2GHz(2 cores)
i7 3720QM : 3.4GHz - 3.5GHz (378$) i7 3820QM : 3.5GHz - 3.6GHz (568$) i7 3920XM can be overclocked to 4.5GHz (1096$) If i was you , i would wait 1 year and buy i7 3920XM for half-price (500$) i7 3720QM is good enough , 100MHz+ (i7 3820QM) won't make any difference (at least not noticable) Or just build a desktop with i5 3570k + Z77 mobo + Nvidia GTX 660Ti Laptop: Mini PC :: |
