Hello

. I'm looking to run dolphin at 3x at 1080p with no lag.

I'm looking to build a new beefy htpc with a sandy i5 2500k, 4 gb ram, and a Radeon HD 5570 2GB 128-bit DDR3 video card, low profile. This is going to be hooked up to a 65 inch 1080p plasma.

I was wondering if this would be sufficient to accomplish what I want. I would go with an i7 but I don't want to break the bank, so it's outta the question. Would a cheaper i5 760 be sufficient as well even?

1080p require at least Ati 5770 or Nvidia GTX 460

Well, beefy in terms of the processor for a htpc. I don't know much about video cards. Too many. I'm looking to build a emu console htpc that runs pretty much everything retro console/ arcade game i throw at it all the way up to gamecube/wii @ HD playback. Ok, so if i go with either of those 2 cards i should be able to achieve 3x 1080p gameplay?

I don't know about "3x 1080" but i5 2500k OC at 4.5Ghz + Nvidia GTX 460 can handle 1080(1920x1080) and anti-alias 4x without lag
i5 760 @ 3.6ghz is good but some game still not getting fullspeed

Running my i5 750 without overclocking (although Intel Turbo is enabled) and I can run new super mario bros at 4x anti-alias at 1080p on my 46' LED TV at full speed. I would agree with having at least a 5770 or 460 though...I have a msi OV'ed 560-ti and it works great.

Not on all games though. A GTX 460 is sufficient for fractional/3x @ 1080p on all games and fractional/3x @ 1080p + 4xSSAA on some games. You will likely still be able to run at fullspeed most of the time it's just that some spots in some games will cause slowdowns.

Damn it, so there's no way i could get smooth 1080p performance out of that HIS 5570 2 gb card? I would really like that 3x scaling as it makes these games look great.

From the looks of it all htpc cases have a rough time fitting full size cards and it seems low profile is the standard for these kinds of builds, but i want things running correctly.

Only weak low end cards have low profile cards (for obvious reasons). You'll be fine running dolphin on such a card but you'll have to lower the efb scale and leave AA/pixel lighting/pixel depth off. In order to run games at a high internal resolution you will need a high end video card, and therefore not low profile. So you have a decision to make, low profile, or high resolution.
