I think he's the guy doing the MGS custom textures, and that he mentioned somewhere that the game loads identical images from different folders to use as different textures (e.g. if at low res the texture for hair could be identical to the texture for a wooden door as they were both just a square of brown, but then when you put a better hair/door texture in to replace it, your hair would look wooden or your doors would look hairy), meaning if the file path and name relative to the ISO root were tagged onto what was hashed, everything would be fine.
