You don't need any IOSes. Just get SystemMenu.wad and install that.
Main Laptop:
Dell XPS 17
i7 2720QM @ 2.2GHz
8GB DDR3 RAM
Nvidia GeForce GT 555M
Windows 7 64-bit

Well, you are wrong... IOSes aren't needed for Dolphin, EXCEPT in some situations (all of these situations has been confirmed during my experience with Dolphin):
  • IOS17 is needed to boot Mortal Kombat Armageddon
  • Most games that use IOS reload when booting will need their corresponding IOS to be present.
  • Any Wii, WiiWare or Virtual Console game that you want working after pressing home and selecting "Reset" will need their corresponding IOS to be present.
Avell A70 MOB: Core i7-11800H, GeForce RTX 3060, 16 GB DDR4-3200, Windows 11 (Insider Preview)
ASRock Z97M OC Formula: Pentium G3258, GeForce GT 440, 16 GB DDR3-1600, Windows 10 (22H2)

I havent thoroughly tested but these cases all sound correct.
have you found any that actually require more than the ticket?

Mortal Kombat Armageddon needs the complete IOS dump to boot, having only the ticket makes the game freeze right after Health and Safety screen. Some games keep working after pressing home and selecting "Reset" if you have only the ticket, others not (also, there are some cases that the game reset only with the ticket)...

I find this intriguing. I was just thinking about the use of the wii menu and how superfluos it was to have on my system. But now that there is a use for it due to game compatibility, I have wii system menu 4.2 up but no mii or channels or anything just place settings for them. can anyone else chime in on additional games that may require this other than virtual and wiiware?

Can I direct the wii menu to my iso(s) and load thru the menu?

I know on dolphin I've been able to mount an image and play. There in lies the dilemma, auto-mounting the image. I have to wonder if its possible to use an auto loader within dolphin. And whether or not the menu is able to use a virtual drive. The menu doesn't recognize what ever emulated drive it thinks is there, but honestly never tried mounting one and then running the menu.

The region of the system menu that you are using must match the game that you want to display in the disc channel, to pick a particular game you can use either the default iso setting in the configuration or use File > Change Disc.

Note that only some games will launch from the disc channel, and some games have issues saving when launched from the disc channel
