How to enable 2nd player mk double dash?

I wanna play with 2 (or more) players on Mario Kart Double Dash. Game runs full speed and does not crash. But, when I set the buttons on player 2, with the option 'pad' it just not react. So, when choosing with character you want for your kart player 1 can choose but player 2 can't. It is like you have to enable the 2nd controller first, but how? Thanks.

Go to Settings -> Gamecube tab and set Port 2 as "Standard Controller"
