So I managed to find a used i7-3770K for $50 online (I have an unused B75 board lying in my room that I thought I'd put to good use), and I was just wondering if it is much slower than the 4790K? Or is the difference negligible? I should also mention that I don't plan on overclocking any time soon (I'm a power consumption freak, and the B75 board wouldn't allow for OC anyway.) Thanks in advance for your input!

Haswell architecture has been known to be 30% faster in dolphin than ivy bridge i.e. the 3770k so the 4790k would be possibly about 40% faster in dolphin than the 3770k as standard.

4790k has better performance per core plus a higher stock clock speed. 4790k is also known to be better at overclocking.
Laptop: Intel i7 4900mq, 8GB ram, GTX 760M, Windows 8.1 64-bit

It really doesn't matter as you would be able to play most games at max speed anyway.

According to this and as long as both cpus are at stock speeds: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AunYlOAfGABxdFQ0UzJyTFAxbzZhYWtGcGwySlRFa1E#gid=1
A 3770k has a value of 11,5 minutes while a 4790k has a value of 7 minutes in the dolphin benchmark. The difference is 64% at stock clocks.

You should probably reread that doc. You're comparing a 4790K OCed to 4.4GHz against a stock 3770K.

Haswell is about 30% faster than ivy bridge at any clock rate. A number as high as 64% should be a dead give away that your comparison is flawed.

Both cpus use their max turbo boost speeds in the doc. That's why i suppose they are stock. 4790K is exactly the same with i7-4770k at 4.3 ghz in the doc btw (turbo boost of 4790K with two cores). Also the difference of Time * MHz (basically IPC) is higher than 30% between the two cpus, about 40%.

Intel says max stock turbo for the 4690K is 3.9GHz, not 4.4: http://ark.intel.com/products/80811/Intel-Core-i5-4690K-Processor-6M-Cache-up-to-3_90-GHz

because no-one linked it, one link to the intel ark page stating the 4790K's turbo is 4.4 GHz: http://ark.intel.com/products/80807/Intel-Core-i7-4790K-Processor-8M-Cache-up-to-4_40-GHz

My bad. I was looking at the wrong model this whole time.
