How much of an Improvement will a better cpu make?

Wow,I checked this thread last night and tried to reply from my phone but got side tracked.
Nice to see its toned down now LOL.

Anyway, having owned a 2600k @ 4.7ghz before I traded it for the complete mATX Core i7 920 setup, I can say it salughtered everything in its path. And It was my first Intel cpu that I used as my main rig. Thats the reason I have a 1155 board. A MSI P67A-GD65.

I just didnt realize how cpu dependent Dolphin is, but after getting Wii Sports Resort going yesterday I can easily see that now, that and two players in boxing on Wii Sports..It started diping into
20fps range, when it Ive got it locked to 60fps.

Ive got an RMA out for a Phenom II 955, for a friend, when it gets back I can toss it in the HTPC and see how well it does. It should be back anytime now, its been awhile and I totally forgot about it.

My network needs a major overhual, So Ill hold off on the HTPC upgrade for as long as I can.

So this brings to light a new question, is there a was to consistently and reliably benchmark dolphin?

I ask because, at the moment, the Athlon X2 6400+ gets thrown to 100% load on both cores, and earlier today, Wii sports was running kinda jerky and it hadnt done that before. I looked and the only thing going on in the back ground was windows update d/ling updates.

So, could I get by with an AThlon II X4, or should I up to say a Phenom II x2 or X4?
The motherboard supports up to X6 Phenom IIs, but Im not sure the power plan in this board can actually handle one.

My other option, is a dualcore 1155 Sandybridge cpu, something like a G620. I have a board and memory for it.

Anyway, great Emulator here, its saved me from the kids while the actual Wii is off getting repaired.

with that motherboard I would stick to a x4. An x6 works best with 880+ motherboard chipsets. Im using a x4 830 with a 5450 in one of my computers and its great, no problems.

The only difference between an x6 (thuban) and an x4 (deneb) is the number of cores. Explain why the mobo chipset would make any difference or why a 880 chipset would be better to combine with a thuban chip.

2500k cpus are amazing value when you factor in overclocking.

There is little reason to consider anything else if you are a real pc gamer and are using a desktop. I bought my 2500k day one last year, and have had it clocked at 4.7 at 1.45 volts(ohhhh dangerous voltage, not really) for over 13 months now on a simple thermalright TRUE cooler. I havent had a single BSOD since I put voltage to 1.45. Thats 12 months without a crash. Good luck getting that with AMD cpu.

You really should only consider a recent intel cpu for running dolphin because intel cpus have SSE4 instuction set(as well as SSE5 or avx with 2500k) which is a huge boost to dolphins speed. Only amd bulldozer series have SSE4 as well, but bulldozer cpus are not meant for gaming, and never were, even though Im sure some people will try to convince you otherwise.

Some people insist on using AMD cpus no matter what. Nothing in the world will convince them of Intel superiority on CPU front. No point in arguing with them really. Let them continue to live in ignorance.

AMD still hasnt released a cpu thats faster than 45nm core2 quads. Those processors came out in March 2008, nearly 4 years ago. Like I said, nothing will convince them that they are living in the past by buying amd cpu's.
