How exactly the does the dolphin's video recorder work?

Under emulation, the whole "start recording/read only mode thing". What type of file does that work under exactly? And is there any way to get it to actually record your gameplay in an actual movie file?(mp3, avi, wmp) anything like that.

It makes a file of the controller input, then later you can replay it and export a movie (avi I think)
