How do you fix lag problem?

Just installed dolphin- "amazing job" but one thing my game lags. I'm playing a gamecube game (super smash bros melee) and the players move slowly sometimes and then get back to normal. Any Help? I'm new to this thing.

Also when I play some colors are messed up like the map's backgrounds. Bright colors are usually displayed as white
If this is something that is supposed to happen please tell me.
