How do I turn off the Wii remote?

One guide I read said holding the "Home" button will do it but that hasnt worked for me. The home button is the button in between the - and + right? Kind of burning through batteries right now if I forget to take them out when I'm not playing.

In my defense, someone gave me this Wii recently and it has always had the rubber cover on it. I moved over to the Wii later to play SMG and when I checked the battery I saw the power icon on the Wii remote on the screen. Blush
