How can you be called a pirate when you own a legit goddamn copy of the game, even after showing proof?

I fail to understand the logic behind this when it comes to staff members. Huh
(Note, this is a question regarding staff, not the site itself. Couldn't think elsewhere to put it.)

If you own the game, but downloaded it off the internet then it's piracy.
You have to rip your own copy for it to not be piracy.
Even if it is exactly the same information as what you could get from the internet, it's still piracy.

That's just the thing. I didn't. :l I had my neighbor (as I now know the term 'ripped') rip the files off the game onto a flashdrive (as I've had him done before). I "downloaded" (not the term to use from now on, I see) it from the flashdrive into my folders for Dolphin.

I know what Piracy is, I don't support it, nor am I pirate, but I'm still acussed of being a pirate for coining the wrong term. He never mentioned what it was called, he just told me he could get the files off my discs and he's the one who introduced me to Dolphin in the first place, so I assumed he 'downloaded' the files off the disc, onto his computer, downloaded those onto my flashdrive, and then gave my back my flashdrive, and told me how to get them to load. I still say it's all a misunderstanding, and I'm not looking to be unbanned from my account, but I still dislike I'm still being called a pirate for simply not understanding what the official term is, since I wasn't the one doing the 'ripping' in the first place. Confused

It's due to the way copyright law works in many countries. Fair use gives you the right to make copies of the media you own both as a form of backup and to share with your immediate family members (e.g. copying a CD for your spouse, parent, or child). Downloading copyrighted material doesn't fall under fair use, because you're not downloading a copy of the disc/cart that you bought yourself; you're downloading a copy of some other disc/cart that somebody else made and did not have the right to share with you, because you're not family. As such, downloading copyrighted material is always piracy. Whether you own a physical copy of the thing you downloaded is irrelevant.

Borrowing a friend's hardware to rip your own disc would theoretically fall under fair use, however.

I don't think we need this thread anymore, unless the issue really hasn't been resolved (in which case, please send me a PM so I can handle anything else). As I said, it's important to use the correct terminology, as we're big on prohibiting piracy on these forums. Using the wrong words obviously resulted in a not-so-friendly experience here, so do be careful from now on.

Btw, I would ask you to use your original, recently unbanned account from now on. Your previous thread has been reopened as well.

Agreed. This thread can be trashed at this point. Smile
