I know this is a long shot but I thought I would try posting this problem here. I am currently attending university and have no problems connecting with people who are not on the university internet. I can host or join perfectly fine, but when I try and netplay with friends who are on the same network as me, we simply can't connect. The university's wifi is called the same thing pretty much everywhere so I thought that could be the issue but it also has backup networks that have different SSIDs and even those don't work.

If anyone has any ideas I am all ears. Thanks for the help!

I wouldn't be surprised if your university isolates clients. Many schools do for security reasons.

There is no way around that if so beyond just hosting your own wireless network

What do you mean by isolates clients? I just want to make sure I fully understand this.

It means that your wireless network does not allow any traffic between other people connected to the network, only the router/gateway.

And even if you're connected to the other networks, your uni just doesn't allow traffic between the two, which isn't unusual.

That makes sense. Thank you. But what's strange is that I managed to connect with a friend a few months ago after a while of not being able to connect. Perhaps something changed with the network on that day.

In case anyone ever runs into a similar issue, I managed to get past this issue by using Hamachi.
