HELP! I can't configure my gamecube controls

it works great and everything.... but when i press buttons on my keyboard it doesn't do anything to the game! I am using a wireless USB keyboard. and when I go to the gamecube pad controls I press enter and it lights up the start button, so it should work right? what am I doing wrong? HELP
