I have a bad problem. But before I tell this story I have some questions.
1.How many of you have your pc/laptop/rig hooked up to a tv or display with an hdmi cable?
2.How many of you have ever had a HDTV fry itself by hooking up your rig to it via HDMI?
3.Is there anything wrong with using HDMI over the standard VGA cables? Should I use VGA?
Also, If you use an HDMI, please tell me any problems, pros or cons, anything you want to share. I'd love to hear it all.
If you use VGA, still, feel free to post everything you love or maybe hate about it.
Here is the story.
Earlier today I got off work early and I was extremely happy. Well I had fixed a friends gaming laptop I had just fixed after work and decided I wanted to watch youtube videos. My parents(I'm 17) have a big 48in. HDTV in our living room. I plugged the laptop up with an hdmi cable... I never got it in. As soon as the cable touched the laptop jack I saw an arc and sparks and the tv cut off immediately. Also note, the same hdmi cable works with our playstation 3 constantly and has worked with my desktop and laptop. Also note that the laptops GPU is still fine. I played crysis 2 afterwards to check it. Now, in my opinion this is obviously some sort of hardware failure with the laptop and tv. I don't know how or why but it is. But now my parents have been saying that the HDMI from my computer is not made to be used with a big screen(thus this topic and my anger are born). I'm not mad at them, but I am mad for the fact of my dad has come in before with my desktop hooked in via HDMI and us watch music videos or me play games and not complained one bit about it. And now I'm getting yelled at for something the tv is SUPPOSED to be able to do and has before but for some reason fries the tv(and our direct TV satelite dish somehow) I'm a little pissed off. I'm going to show my parents this topic because in the tv's handbook a pc/laptop is not included on the list for things to be plugged up with HDMI. They are listed under VGA. I have also used vga on the tv. But HDMI is so much more convenient. Now I have never thought of using the internet to settle an argument. The idea of it sounds scary seeing as the internet usually starts them. I guess we will see how this works. Also I decided to use this forum because alot of people here are great with computers and tech and someone will surely know what to say on this. No flaming please.
PS. If anyone wants to know rig info, kind of tv, etc. Post and I'l tell you so you may figure it out.
