MaJoR Wrote:Hmm... this looks familiar. That pattern has been common in marketing materials for decades. It's unlikely they got the idea from AMD. Picolla289 Wrote:I think that we should talk about how a cpu from 8 years ago can still play some of todays games at 20+ fps on medium settings. Core 2 cpus have about the same IPC as modern AMD cpus. A core 2 quad is therefore only about 1/3 to 2/5 slower across the board than a modern amd cpu since very few games can effectively use more than 4 cores. That's not enough to make a huge difference in average fps unless the game is extremely cpu heavy. So these results aren't that surprising.

@MaJoR - The "bursts of light" pattern probably invokes a sense of how blazingly fast the CPU is supposed to be. Process data at light-speed, you know? Of course this looks silly a decade later when a product has been completely eclipsed by others in terms of performance (in the second picture's case), but when it came out, it sure looked cool!
@Gartel - Punish that thing in Dolphin. See how fast it does with any game + SW + Interpreter + DSP-LLE (Interpreter too). I want to see it cry 08-10-2015, 08:10 AM

In my link Skylake performed slightly better sometimes or the same. When given DDR4-3600 it completely sweeped every other CPU without any trouble. If you're going to go for DDR4 Ram you might as well go DDR4-3200 or just go DDR3L 08-10-2015, 08:45 AM
Skylake outperforms haswell by about 5% on average with DDR3 or slow DDR4 ram and 10% with high speed DDR4 ram. This is backed up by both of the sites you linked. In some applications the faster memory makes a big difference and in others it makes none at all. Either way skylake consistently wins.
So yes high speed DDR4 ram does improve skylakes performance over lower speed ram in some applications. But your claim that "at Ram frequencies that low Haswell is better/at the same level" is not supported by the evidence. Nor does it support your claim that "Skylake doesn't play well with lower frequency DDR4 ram". Although this is at least closer to the truth.

In the anandtech links I posted Skylake lost consistently. Are you sure you aren't remembering something else? 08-10-2015, 09:45 AM

DDR3 skylake vs haswell:
Page 1: http://www.anandtech.com/show/9483/intel...eration/11 Wins 12 out of the 14 applications, and by a pretty large margin on most of them. Page 2: http://www.anandtech.com/show/9483/intel...eration/12 Wins 3 out of 3 tests that were done with DDR3. Again with pretty large margins. Page 3: http://www.anandtech.com/show/9483/intel...eration/13 Wins 6 out of 6 tests and by a VERY large margin. By the way it wins in dolphin too with or without fast ram.

Yeah it wins in Dolphin. But most of what you linked are synthetics.
Also, I'm going to be upgrading my G3258 system due to it bottlenecking my R9-285 but I don't know what to upgrade to. Thinking about the i7-4790k but I don't want to overclock. I do like the stock turbo clock though. 08-14-2015, 05:35 AM

Changed my 4 year old fan, the difference in temps is extraordinary.
