Depends on the brightness, type of backlighting system, and type of diffusion system used. Like Rachel said it can cause eyestrain. This gets worse at closer distances because your eye absorbs more light and thus perceives a higher brightness.

Only time it's ever been useful for me is when I need to find my keyboard in complete darkness and don't want to fumble around trying to feel it or turn the lights on because I'm too lazy.

If it costs the same as the non-backlit version (which is usually does) then I say why not?

Me either. And I generally have some hair on my mousepad from my cat.

For me the G500 is easily worth the extra money for the extra buttons alone.

A "cheap" mechanical keyboard is $80, and the high end runs into the $200. If your budget is $50 you pretty much should just get a high quality rubber-dome keyboard. I'm rather fond of my Razer Arctosa Silver, personally.

Since I'm on the subject... I hate mechanical keyboards. It's just not my thing. Mechanical keyboards have big clunky keys and insanely long keytravel. Sure they activate half way, but why not just cut the keytravel to half and let you press it all the way? And why not make the keys shorter? Meh. I definitely think mechanic keyboards are a bit stuck in hipster limbo, mimicking 30-40 year old keyboards. Why not bring mechanical switches to something more modern? Flat and thin keys and super short keytravel for me, whether rubber-dome or not. I suppose my very rapid typing could adjust to a these fat keyed mechanical keyboards and half-presses, but mechanical keyboards are very expensive and I simply don't like those fat-keyed hipster boards.
