Lenovo's line-up is starting at around €2799 for one with a GTX1070. Yeah... no thanks.

Currently looking for something to replace my current laptop again. Still don't see any decent laptops with a fast CPU that won't throttle. The Dell isn't available in my country (anymore) for some reason and it's a lot more expensive here looking at the price history so that one is out.

I've been looking into NUCs too and my eyes fell on the Intel NUC6i7KYK. Kinda expensive and it looks like it gets a little too hot as well. It has some great I/O though.
I just need something small and portable with a fast CPU that I can use for work.

Edit: Ordered the NUC6i7KYK. Let's see how it goes.

@laptops

What about heating, overclocking, multi-GPU set ups, easy upgrades of individual components only, easy replacement of individual components only, a price not inflated by miniaturisation?

Sure, laptops are getting better and are more portable. I don't know how many people want to game in the train, though. And even for those that do, the ease of modification and performance improvements offered by desktops are still too big. In a few years, maybe, but not yet.

Also even when desktops will "die" they will still remain in use. After all, office desktops are still a thing, even though there's literally no reason not to use laptops for that.

Desktops have been about to die for about twenty years. They're not going to die as long as people don't want lots of performance.

If you plan to upgrade CPU to either Kabylake or Zen , you will have to use Windows 10 , whenever you like it or not .

lol you don't have to use anything. You can use many of the free Linux distributions out there.

You can still use them in older windows versions you just won't have official graphics drivers for them. If you're using a graphics card that's a non issue. The article title is misleading, as has become the norm these days.

I think it has more to do with you can't use the new CPU extensions :v

Also any old Linux kernels will have the exact same thing going on.

That's true too but that's a non issue.

In unrelated news desktop APUs from AMD next year will use excavator cores, not Zen: https://www.guru3d.com/news-story/amd-announces-7th-generation-desktop-amd-a-series-processors-and-am4.html
Also they're unifying FX and A series under a single socket now (AM4, finally). Desktop CPUs and laptop APUs will however use Zen next year. It's official, my next HTPC upgrade will be kaby lake. I don't know why AMD continues to keep their desktop APU lineup a generation behind their laptop lineup. You would think they would be able to use the same chips for both, just at different clock rates.

Rest in peace, GTX 660. January 2013 to September 9, 2016. Sadly I think it's going to computer hell (due to all my GTX 666 jokes).

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/34131225/rip-gtx660.jpg

A water spill dripped into my computer case, onto the back PCB of my GTX 660 (left side of picture), and onto the motherboard. I found the computer awake at the "Reset BIOS settings" screen, with horizontal color noise lines covering the screen. I rebooted, and ended up with horizontal white lines.

Further testing revealed that the front USB ports work, while the back are dead. LAN and integrated DisplayPort still function.
