Sorry for necro.
I'm reporting some improvement on FFCC with an issue about GBA's having trouble connecting when HLE is checked. Obviously the solution is to use LLE since it does not have this problem, but you lose some frames with LLE.
I can now, with 2 VBAs connected, play with 30 frames almost completely consistent during gameplay while on HLE, with little to no problems reconnecting the VBAs. The builds I used were the one linked in a post here (post 80) and Dolphin's latest dev build as of this post, 6986. I do not get a consistent 30 with 3-4 VBAs connected though, and VBAs start to have problems connecting from there.
Settings I used were tested with both OpenGL and DirectX (same results, however with my Nvidia 670m, I get more consistent frames with OpenGL, no graphical glitches as far as I can see). However, internal resolution had to be set to 1x. Basically, minimal graphic enhancement. I also of course dumped DSPs from my Gamecube to accomplish this, as the built-in DSPs won't work with any DSP option.
Referring back to my statement on the "little to no problems reconnecting the VBAs", the VBAs occasionally take a little while to reconnect, upwards of 3-5 seconds, sometimes immediate re-connection. However, I do not have to reconnect the VBAs manually.
I can at least properly play 2 players in FFCC with only a few hitches. This was accomplished with my Intel i7-3610QM. While a great processor for a laptop, it's a laptop processor.
My recommendation: You should only use HLE if after using it, you have mostly consistent 30 frames. VBA-Ms take longer to connect or don't connect automatically if your frames are suffering. And as usual, don't leave your map on your VBAs.
