GPU stays in idle mode issue - HD 4890

Bug
Hi, I just installed my new HD 4890 1GB and, when I run a Wii game through dolphin, the GPU doesn't go out of idle mode. It only uses around 1-5% of the GPU. The FPS is extremely low therefore. Like 5-6 FPS in the SSBB pre-screens, fx.

All of my other non-emulated games runs just fine.

I use Catelyst 12.4. Newest from ATI's site, today. And all dolphins settings at standard. I tried DX11, same issue.
I tired revisions r601 and r692 of Dolphin.

SSBB ran just fine before with my 8800GTS 512 (sold now) and my now replaced 7900GT.

Any solutions to this problem?

Other specs:

E8500 @ 4.2GHz
4 GB (2x2)
PG-5 Deluxe motherboard
750WATT power supply

Edit1: Tried Catalyst 12.3, same deal. -_-

Does it exit idle mode when you raise the Internal Resolution and/or add anti-aliasing?

I tried to crank the GFX settings up to 4x IR + 9x SSAA. The GPU did jumb to about 50% utilization after this. However, the FPS is still very low FPS, 5-8 FPS. Sad

That's odd, that should've loaded your GPU a lot.

Have you tried PC games? Does it work correctly there?

I edited post 4#. I was wrong about it not utilizing the GPU more with a higher IR and with SSAA. Sorry about that. Note it still only runs with ca. 1-7 FPS! Issue is not solved! It's practically the same thing with or without a higher IR and SSAA.

Yes, all non-emulation games work as they should, as stated.

I just tried New Super Mario Bros, and it seem to run better. 30 FPS with 100% speed, but the game is running in a bit of a slowmode, anyhow. I feels like 50% speed to me. That's strange.

Also, changing the frame rate limiter from 'auto' to 'off' makes SSBB run at 1350%+ speed with a FPS of 1. This in the first info screen loading SSBB.

* Turn OFF VSync in the Catalyst Control Center.
* Download GPU-Z, run the render test and see if the GPU load reaches 100%.
* Now run Dolphin. In the graphics settings, select the Direct3D9 backend, VSync OFF, 4xIR, no AA, 1xAF, disable audio throttle, set the frame limiter to 'Auto' and see if there's any improvement.

2.

Try this old revision of Dolphin: http://www.dolphin-emu.org/download.html?rev=6515&arch=win64

3.

Uninstall Catalyst 12.4 and install Catalyst 11.11c Hotfix (the best driver for that card)

1: These things had no effect(s). My GFX card runs at 98% with two programs of GPU Tool running at the same time. About 75% with one program.

2. This version of dolphin ran slighty better actually (ca. 20 FPS avg), but far from playable. Still massive slowdown. I tried to use opengl with r601 and that didn't produce any new results (worse than r6515)

3. This driver had no effect(s). I do use driver sweeper after a normal uninstall + reboot.

Does Dolphin not support this card, at all? I should really have brought a nVdia card, instead.

Is anyone else using it with Dolphin? How's the results of that?

It should work. I had a 4870 before, and that worked perfectly. My 6870 also works perfectly.
Getting an NVIDIA card wouldn't really solve that issue. Plenty of people also have issues with them.

Have you tried more games other than SSBB and New Super Mario Bros?
Oh and did the card exit its idle mode?

Now don't anyone of you dare laugh at me, but... (or get bad, hopefully)

You see, because I play some older games, I sometimes turn off one of the core units of the CPU through msconfig, and I *somehow* forgot all about it. I really thought, subconsciously, that they both were on. Dual core support was on in Dolphin, ect. My other games (also newer games) ran just fine before they're not so CPU intensive, of course. I am very sorry for the time wasted helping me Sad - but thanks for being helpful, guys! Smile

On another note: r77 of Dolphin ran quite well with just 1 core unit active. 20-50 (jumpy) FPS. Thought I'd share that.

Alright, no problem. Good to see you've solved it.
