GCN Adapter Not Working

I can not get Smashing drive to see the GameCube Controller connected via a USB-OTG adapter connected to my phone. Android asks if Dolphin can use the USB device and I agree to it.

What happens:
The game does not see that I have a GameCube controller plugged into the official adapter.
It shows a black screen with "Please insert a Controller into Controller Socket 1" in white.

What should happen:
It should goto the into cinematic as it does when using an emulated controller.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Plug GameCube controller into slot one of Nintendo adapter
2. Plug GameCube adapter into USB Type-C male to USB 3.0 Type-A adapter
3. Plug USB Type-C adapter into phone
4. Switch Dolphin into "GameCube Adapter" mode in GCN setting
5. Start Smashing Drive
6. Accept system USB access prompt
7. Get controller screen
   

My setup:
Phone: Nexus 6P
OS: PureNexus 7.1.1-20170215-OFFICIAL with Magisk 11.1
Dolphin: 5.0-2877
MD5 of Smashing Drive: b27ae90ff97ad3af42d57dba6408d5dd

I hope this is good enough for someone to track this issue down, thanks for any help.

Does dolphin also freeze on stopping the emulation? If so, this is the same issue as I have here on my Nvidia Android TV. I think I have to debug this sometimes....

It does also freeze when attempting to exit.
