It seems that both types of LLE audio cause VBAM to freeze until I halt Dolphin. Any other non-default settings you have?

The VBA-M link needs the real DSP rom dumps, not the ones that are bundled with Dolphin.

I've managed to get 4 instances of VBA-M and connected and working but each one causes a further drop in framerate. It's playable but sounds terrible at ~45fps. I've seen online that changing the throttle and timeout in VBA-M can help but neither seems to work. Is there anything I can do to bring the game up to speed?

You need a faster CPU. Bear in mind that you are emulating a GameCube which has a CPU of 486Mhz and 4 GBA's which have a CPU of 16Mhz each. And the GameCube's GPU and the 4 GBA's video hardware...

You need to use DSP LLE.
