I'm going to assume that by "patch", you're referring to the patch that stops Star Fox Adventures from crashing right after the Nintendo logo. Said patch, and lots more info, is here: Star Fox Adventures - shall not be named Wiki

As mentioned in the wiki article, and at least a dozen times in this thread, the D3D9 plug-in sucks. The patch will get you to the main menu and all the way to the first Arwing level, but after that Dolphin will freeze.

STEPS TO FIX:
  1. Read this post, and my reply to it: http://forums.dolphin-emu.org/thread-36-post-108372.html#pid108372

If D3D11 doesn't work:
  1. Update DirectX and all your graphics card software and drivers.
  2. Try the OpenGL plug-in instead.
  3. Get a better graphics card.
  4. Get a better computer. (SFA is kind of resource-intensive anyway.)

AFTER FIXING:
  1. Tell us that you fixed it.
  2. Tell us how fast the game is running on your machine (i.e. VPS number), whether you changed any settings to make the game run faster (or at all), what sort of glitches or errors you run into while playing the game, etc.
  3. Tell us your systems specs. (Example: see my signature)
  4. Essentially, follow Blaster's example. He's doing it right.

What are you talking about? The game now works in latest revisions without a patch, but not without some issues, although you can get a lot further now than with that outdated patch.

Secondly, the DirectX 9 plugin is currently the best option for Dolphin and offers the best performance while looking just as good as the OpenGL and DX11 plugins. Linux and Mac users don't have much choice, but if you are using Windows you will want to use the DX9 plugin.

Some games may run better with DX11, however these are a rarity and very few work better with DX11 than DX9. DX11 lacks support for EFB -> Ram, EFB scaling and AA meaning some games won't work correctly. Generally the DX11 plugin is slower than DX9 for most games, same for the OpenGL plugin.

The D3D9 plug-in has been fixed? I had read in another thread that this issue couldn't be fixed, because DirectX 9 was supposedly incapable of rendering some of what SFA (and other games) needed rendered. I believe it also said that, for this reason, the plug-in was no longer being updated. (If I ever find this thread again, I'll post a link.) EDIT 9/6/2010: I think I found it: Official DX11 plugin thread

Clearly, then, I was wrong. The lack of detailed, informative posts** notwithstanding, I admit that "D3D9 sucks" was a poor choice of words. What I meant to say was: "I would personally recommend D3D11 over D3D9, because it allowed full completion of the game, from start to finish, with only a few minor, excusable glitches. It also noticeably improved other games in my library, such as Super Mario Sunshine." I apologize if I was... uh, slightly overzealous in promoting D3D11 over D3D9. Blush

Then again, what exactly do you mean by "some issues" and "a lot further"? Are they the same issues that the Wiki article, Blaster and I mention, or does D3D9 create more problems? Can SFA now be played completely from beginning to end with no serious glitches using D3D9? What precise VPS/FPS numbers do D3D11 and D3D9 give on your machine?

I suppose I should also apologize for neglecting to test SFA thoroughly these past few days; I'm busy trying to upgrade to Windows 7. My previous results, however, still stand: I made it through the entire game with D3D11, in 720p widescreen, with all the default settings left as they were upon downloading. Can you confirm this?

**Something like this would probably help everyone out:
"Yes, I got SFA working; here's how I did it, how fast it ran, how far ingame I got, what sort of errors came up, etc."
OR
"No, I can't get it to work, I tried this this and this but it won't run/get past the main menu/get past level X/etc."

EDIT: If the game really IS playable with D3D9, Kraid really should update the game status on page one. Big Grin

Question: are you still referring to a version of Dolphin that you compiled yourself? [link] [link] [link]

You got it working? Excellent! Big Grin Please let us know what sort of framerate you get, any settings changes that gave you more speed, etc. etc. etc.
Again, can you confirm any of what Blaster and I or Xtreme2damax have said?

Going to re-test now; lots of SVN improvements since I last test SFA...
