Posted this also in the Games which hang / freeze / crash / don't boot at all thread but maybe its better suited here?
Quote:Maybe I'm missing something but Phantasy Star Online Episode III: C.A.R.D. Revolution seems to be Broken, even though the wiki page says it has good compatibility. http://wiki.dolphin-emu.org/index.php?title=GPSE8P 06-13-2013, 09:20 AM
Have you enabled Real XFB? Does the md5 of your iso match the one on redump.org? If so, then you probably need the PAL version of the game for it to be playable.

Welp, first I want to say that I tried all three backends (Direct3D9 / Direct3D11 / OpenGL) and got the blackscreen each time, I swear. But something must have happened... because now it seems Direct3d9 or OpenGL will make the game work correctly. Direct3D11 will still breaks the game though.
Also to answer your question, XFB (External Frame Buffer?) was disabled, and the MD5 did matched c0d2c8a25b12249ee70c5655b2270069. Dolphin still shows it as a 1/5 star game though, is that something I should worry about? 06-13-2013, 11:17 AM
The star rating in Dolphin can be outdated. The latest rating is in the compatibility wiki.

Is there any specific settings someone could recommend to me for this game? I have been looking at and changing various settings, but the game never changes much, and always comes out quite a bit blurry. I know the video is fairly old at this point, but I am wondering if it's possible to set it up in such a way that I can get similar results (https://youtu.be/LltxjiSiOVk)... or even just in general, to anyone who plays this game, what settings do you find to look nicest?

Set the IR to 2x or higher and enable anti-aliasing as well as anisotrophic filtering, and you can greatly improve the graphical quality of most games. Also, update to a 5.0 release candidate at least, or better yet a development version. PSO has a lot of graphical effects that don't work correctly in 4.0.2, at least as far as Episode I & II is concerned. Episode III probably shares at least some of the problems.

Finally my new copy of the game arrived today. Right off the bat, there were some issues I noticed so far. Please let me know if this is normal, or if there is some setting I need to change compared to my Episode I & II settings.
1) Game appears to start in default graphics settings and low resolution, does not implement your actual graphics settings until you trigger it by selecting the graphics menu in the main Dolphin window, then everything suddenly works. Every single time I boot the game, I need to open the graphics menu to remedy this. 2) ' \Dolphin Emulator\Game Settings\GPSE8P.ini ' does not save [Core] and [Video_Settings], the way Episode I & II does. I am not sure if this is an issue, as I haven't seen the difference with those settings being enabled or disabled. Just found it odd that they were not saved to game settings like the previous iteration. 3) I've seen Aleron post in the Episode I & II thread about missing characters (letters/keys) on screen, which I never experienced in that game. However it seems frequent in this one. Is there a particular setting that helps reduce this? It's not always the same characters, not in every instance of the game. Very random. Overall, much more glitchy than I expected due to the above, but definitely playable. Please share any additional settings you guys found to benefit this game. I realize this is not as popular a game for most. =] 09-03-2016, 02:14 AM

The game INI forces real XFB to be on, which is required for videos but scales the output down to the native GameCube resolution. Opening the graphics settings overrides that. This sounds like the kind of problem that is caused by the texture cache accuracy setting not being accurate enough. The default game INI sets it to medium. Because you're overriding the game INI by always opening the graphics configuration, the setting in the game INI has no effect. 09-03-2016, 08:36 AM
Episode I & II requires the safe texture cache setting to avoid invisible letters in text, so I would assume that Episode III requires it, as well. I force SafeTextureCacheColorSamples = 0 in my user INI, since the system INI doesn't. It's curious that Episode III requires Real XFB for videos, as Episode I & II hasn't needed that setting for a long time.
