Looks like your GPU (or driver?) doesn't support bounding box emulation. I'd like someone else to confirm that since I don't keep track of what GPUs can do what.

After starting dolphin click on controllers (click on gc pad in Dolphin 4.0).Click on configure on port 1 (Make sure your device is set on Keyboard and mouse). Now on the control stick box you will see up,down, left, right.Left click the little box beside up,then move your mouse forward.Your control stick control up will be set on axis y-.Now whenever you move your mouse forward Mario will go forward. Now set down to Axis y+ Right to Axis x+ and left to Axis x-.now you are all set.Move your mouse in circle and Mario will roll.
(I hope this Helps)

Dunno how to get rid of them. Switched from OGL and dx11. Didn't do anything. Enabled/disabled everything that had to do with Aspect ratio/resolution as well. I know the picture is in windowed, but it's doing the same thing in Fullscreen as well.
I also downloaded this fix https://www.dropbox.com/s/5uz13myxt67xf20/PaperMarioBlackBars.7z?dl=0 but it didn't help either.

I have the same issue but I think that's just the way the game is. Are you only getting these during the "cutscenes" in the game? The game has these bars during the cutscenes to give a false 16:9 image. So when you use the widescreen hack the bars aren't actually made long enough to go to the edges of the screen

The GPU is an AMD Radeon HD 6490M. I'd be happy to help you confirm this but I'm not sure what I'm looking for. Searching for "bounding box emulation" only returns posts related to Dolphin and TTYD. Is there another term I should be looking for?

Yes, the GPU feature that Dolphin uses for bounding box emulation is called something else. Unfortunately I don't remember what.

AFAIK you need OpenGL 4.3 or DirectX11 support or newer. Anything older (e.g. DX10/DX10.1 cards or OpenGL 4.2 and older) won't work with Bounding Box emulation (but you should still be able to run Dolphin with other games on those old cards)...
Avell A70 MOB: Core i7-11800H, GeForce RTX 3060, 16 GB DDR4-3200, Windows 11 (Insider Preview)
ASRock Z97M OC Formula: Pentium G3258, GeForce GT 440, 16 GB DDR3-1600, Windows 10 (22H2)

Thanks for confirming this. My card only includes up to OpenGL 4.1 so that explains the weird effects.

I was hoping the lack of paper effects would just be visual issue but it's preventing me from getting in to the great tree in Boggly woods with Flurry. Would someone be so kind as to get past that point on my save for me?

No longer required.

To add information to my earlier post (on the last page), the MD5 checksum I generated from my ISO was

d13426a926055be11a8330b27fe231ea

Is this a valid checksum?

I don't think so. My checksum is "db9a997a617ee03bbc32336d6945ec02" and I just ripped my game a couple weeks ago.
