According to Dolphin, my MD5 checksum is db9a997a617ee03bbc32336d6945ec02  .
No clue what that means.
It's been a long time since I've played Paper Mario, but I actually kind of remember a problem like this happening sometimes. actually, that was because my sister chewed on the analog sticks of all our controllers...
Wish I remembered how to fix it.
I'll try to redump it when I have the opportunity and if the Wii is in the mood to function (it's kind of a biannual thing where it'll work for seven hours twice a year, but I'm trying to use the window of opportunity to dump the ISOs instead of just replaying Luigi's Mansion).

That's the correct MD5 for the American version of this game, so you have a good dump. Something else must be the problem.

Hm. At first I thought it must be a problem with the analog stick on my DS3, but the problem still happened with the keyboard. Huh

Sounds like another bounding box issue. Make sure "Store EFB Copies to Texture Only" and "Disable Bounding Box" options in GFX settings are disabled then try again to see if it improves something...

I've been playing the game mostly without issues with the recommended settings (bounding box efb copies and all that), but I still have a few issues that don't make emulation perfect, so I'm just wondering if it's possible at all to play perfectly or this is as good as it's going to get:

When using directx the game runs nearly perfect except that it slows down in some transition areas with big objects like the bridge in the first chapter (but it doesn't slow when you use paper abilities or when going through pipes), it also crashes when asking Merluvlee where to go.

When using opengl the game doesn't crash when asking Merluvlee where to go but every single transition area (including pipes and paper abilities) makes the game slow down to a crawl.

Is it possible to fix those issues or do I just have to deal with it? Because otherwise I'll go with directx since it seems to provide the most playable results.

Is it me or does this game have problems with OpenGL? It slows down massively everytime a paper effect is being used, while Direct3D 11 runs them perfectly with the same settings.

That can happen depending on what GPU drivers you have.

These are already the newest Nvidia driver. Wiki says to disable Vsync, but it happens regardless.
