I think I know why the Toon Render is overly bright and washed out.

Explosions from certain weapons (such as Brian's nuclear barrel) will cause the screen to flash incredibly bright for a half-second, causing the graphics to look like how they do in Dolphin. I'm no expert on coding, so I can't give any tips on how to fix this, but Dolphin looks to be reading the lighting incorrectly.
Was gonna call my friends and get 'em all together
I was gonna go and start a band
But everything I wanna do, it's already been done
Why would I wanna go and do it again?

Except for the incorrect lighting, the game seems to run perfectly. The levels seems to lack shadows and shading in general. Changing the anisotropic filtering mid-game sometimes makes the colors seem more normal, for reasons unknown. After "fixing" the colors with the anisotropic filtering, they might suddenly pop back to being incorrect though, and more fiddling with the anisotropic filtering might not help again.

First picture is the default, extremely incorrect rendering.
Second picture is with the colors "fixed", by changing the anisotropic filtering.
Third is of the original game.

@OldNice - I can confirm that fiddling with the Anisotropic setting will work temporarily. It seems to randomly go back to the old rendering. Sometimes after a minute and sometimes immediately.

If messing with this setting will "fix" it, does that mean it's an issue with Dolphin itself and could possibly be a simple fix?

I'm very happy to at least be able to play it without falling through the map.

Thanks to Stenzek and everyone for working on this commit to get the shading fixed. I can't be sure due to gamecube videos being so low res but it seems like the black lines around things are too big and slightly opaque. I should submit a...I don't know how to submit an issue anymore, I first posted the issue about 6 years ago. It has been a while.

The lines being bigger is likely a consequence of higher resolutions. At 1x IR, I compared side by side with Dolphin vs GC over video capture card and it looked dead on.

I did think that maybe it was some enhancement causing it. It seems like a vector version of that mipmapping thing you guys solved recently, at least thats how id describe it. Would it be something that could be fixed in the future or is it more outside of the scope?
