OK, I'll grab some of the other builds between 3153 and 3409 and see if I can pinpoint from which build the slowdown kicks in for me. I tried a few other games to see if anything else was affected but they all appeared fine.
[GC] Burnout 2: Point of Impact
|
OK, I tried loads of different versions and none seemed to slow down then I realised that this was a classic case of "user error" - d'oh!!
Basically, when I update my version of Dolphin about once a month I pretty much just dump the contents of the new .7z file over my existing install. This overwrites my DSP ROM files that are in the GC folder and I must have forgotten to put the ones I dumped from my Wii back the last time I updated so I've clearly been using the Dolphin ones for about a month. This time round I didn't forget to copy them into the GC folder and they clearly make a difference speed-wise. I tend to run Dolphin using the DSP LLE recompiler instead of using DSP HLE emulation and the built-in Dolphin clearly ones run faster. Apologies for the cock up! I guess I was just too eager to try Burnout 2 with audio again and the test version I tried was also using the built-in DSP ROMs (I just extracted to a new folder) so it ran fine speed-wise, hence my confusion at the apparent slow down I got when I updated my main Dolphin files this time round. The screen blur thing I mentioned still exists in the PAL version, obviously. Not sure if it's a biggie or if you need more information on it... or if it's already a known issue? 10-03-2014, 04:58 AM
Burnout 2 will run exactly the same with HLE audio as LLE audio. There's no benefit to using LLE audio in this case.
On my laptop, Burnout 2 has a slowdown related to the Snow conditions on the Crystal Summit tracks. When playing under Snow conditions, the start of Crystal Summit Peak [R] runs at only 35FPS instead of 60FPS, for example. A similar slowdown can be seen on Crystal Summit Lake, where snow appears around the ski lodge.
Oddly, Crystal Summit Peak and Crystal Summit Lake [R] don't experience nearly as much slowdown , if at all. Additionally, all the Crystal Summit tracks run at full speed under Sunny conditions. It doesn't seem like a GPU bottleneck; I get identical slowdowns with both 1xIR and 3xIR+4xAA+16xAF. Any ideas on what's going on, or how I can better pinpoint this bottleneck? Dolphin 4.0-3551. Also tested on 4.0.2 and a couple other revisions in between, with similar results. Windows 8.1 x64 Intel i7-4700MQ Nvidia GT 755M 11-04-2014, 05:18 PM
(11-02-2014, 09:28 AM)JMC47 Wrote: The tracks could just be very slow...I think it's more related to the snow weather effect than the tracks. Crystal Summit Lake is only laggy when there is snow on-screen near the top of the mountain, and is full 60FPS at the base of the mountain. Similarly, Crystal Summit Peak [R] is laggy until the snow lets up around the 4th lap, after which the track runs at full 60FPS. The tracks with rain effects don't experience this lag. Is it possible that the snow causes Dolphin to revert to the software interpreter, or is it simply a bizarrely intensive effect? Is there a way to tell? I still find it weird that only 2 of the 4 Crystal Summit tracks have laggy snow, and the other 2 don't. Interestingly, both of the laggy tracks travel the same direction through the ski resort, where the snow lag is heaviest.
The native aspect ratio fix from 4.0-7133 is awesome, but I'm pretty sure it causes Burnout 2 to be slightly squished; car wheels are oval instead of circular, for example. Using "Stretch to Window" to a 16:9 resolution makes the wheels circular again. The same also applies to Burnout 1.
I don't have screenshots atm, but it's pretty easy to reproduce and notice. Might file a bug report later if it's worth it. 08-26-2015, 08:08 PM
You should file a bug report if you can confirm that it isn't like that on a real console. (You won't be able to do it right now though, since there isn't a working issue tracker.)

The game was probably developed incorrectly. It isn't the only game to look worse with the AR fixes, and I would venture a guess that the AR fixes make it look the way it does on a console (broken).

Welp, just confirmed that Burnout and Burnout 2 on an actual GameCube both run at the squished aspect ratio, and that Dolphin emulates this squished aspect ratio perfectly. Lol.
