Works perfectly fine when I'm on 5.0 and use GameCube adapter for Wii U. But when I use standard controll on 4.0 it won't detect my controller. I followed all the steps on dolphin.
I tried different ports and I restarted dolphin. Direct Connect is checked.

I don't get why it can't detect it when 5.0 can. What is the difference?

Why would you not use 5.0 then?

(that being said, if you're talking about 4.0.2 stable then IDK if it was implemented and working at that stage)

Native Wii U Adapter support was added 13 months after 4.0.2 stable
even the adapter itself wasn't announced until after six months

I need to use Dolphin 4.0-7840 to play Super Smash Bros Melee and Project M online.

I'm trying to get it to work on 4.0-7840.
Tons of other people are using the adapter on that version and you can use the adapter as long as the "direct connect" checkbox exists, according to Dolphin's tutorial.

The direct connect checkbox was removed. You just need to select it in the controller slots dropdown now.
