Games that run fine normally, but fail immediately in netplay

My friends and I have run into this problem multiple times now; a game that runs perfectly in normal use in Dolphin, but doesn't even launch when we try using it in netplay. Specifically; a couple games we've found this issue with are The Sims and Tiger Woods 2005.
We've tried bumping up the pad buffer and everything, and it is to no avail. Are games like these just incompatible with netplay, or is there a possible fix?

Try disabling dual core in the settings.

Didn't seem to fix anything. It might be worth noting that while the VPS is sitting at 60, the FPS is at 0. Is it maybe a purely graphics issue then?

0 FPS / 60 VPS is what happens if a game freezes, so it might not be a graphics issue. If you can't hear any sound from the game, then there's definitely something that's wrong other than the graphics.
