Because dolphin only uses two of the cores (unless you have lle on thread, in which case lle gets a core too) the fact that it is a quad core is irrelevant. What you need for dolphin is speed, and unfortunately 4 x 2.9GHz cores doesn't work like one 11.6GHz core, particularly as often it can't do the next command without the results for the previous one.
So basically for dolphin, in many ways a 4GHz dual core is far better than a 3GHz Quad core, although if you are using LLE on thread then you'd be better with a fast quad core if you could afford it.
