Gamepad D-pad. How do I use the D-pad?

Hi Folks!

I play Dolphin with an Xbox Controller and I wonder how I use the D-pad? The games Metroid Prime 1 and 2 use the D-pad for the scanning feature, could anyone explain how the D-pad is useable?
