Also I should mention that you should take admin89s advice and upgrade your PSU to a more powerful unit if you plan on upgrading your graphic card down the road because overclocking your cpu could bring your peak power consumption up to 500-520w.

Thanks for the advice. As far as the PSU, I don't plan on upgrading the graphics card down the road so even with an overclocked vcore at 1.5 (to err on the side of caution), the recommended PSU is still less than 500W. I think I'm leaning towards the Antec 550W regardless of the final specs of the rig as it has great reviews.

In regards to the sandy bridge cpus, do you speculate a significant price drop when the ivy bridge chips are released? Looking at a previous gen i5 (Clarkdale i5-650), it's currently $50 cheaper on newegg than the i5 2500k so do you think there will be a similar price drop for sandy bridge?

No and no. Intel rarely ever drops prices significantly. They usually just replace the old chips with newer ones at similar prices.

If you want proper audio support DLP.
MAKE SURE YOU USE WINDOWS 7 x64 for performance boost.

Also the 2500K will support the DLP on most games not sure about the i3.

You really should just get an Intel Core i7-2700K for $100 more.
whats the point of building an outdated system for $500?

DLP? You mean DSP LLE don't you?

An extra $100 for absolutely no impact on performance (in dolphin), that's why.

Any processor will support DSP LLE. The question is which games can run fullspeed with dsp LLE.

Thanks for the advice. I've got an unused copy of Windows 7 x64 Ultimate sitting here waiting to be used Big Grin

Also, as Natural Violence said, there's no performance benefit of getting the i7 chip over the i5, especially since I'll just be focusing on Gamecube. I've pretty much decided to go for the i5 but will most likely wait for the ivy bridge chip which is only like 2 months away so this way the system won't be outdated.
