i'm playing fire emblem radiant dawn and it refuses to run above 60% speed. it's not unplayable but it's really unsettling and inconvenient. is there a solution to this?
game won't run above 60% speed

You're probably running into one of two problems: your CPU isn't fast enough, or you're being limited by the terrible macOS GPU drivers.
I think your CPU isn't fast enough for this game. Do you have another computer with a better CPU that you can test it on? Can you change the video backend from OpenGL to MoltenVK and see if that is faster? Apple has notoriously bad OpenGL drivers, and MoltenVK runs Vulkan through Metal, so it should be faster. 01-24-2019, 08:22 PM
1.2 GHz processor is a really bad sign. It's a miracle it's running at 60%.
Running it on the worst possible operating system you could choose means you won't be getting the maximum performance out of an extremely weak processor. My sincere recommendation is that if you're interested in emulation, seek out weaker systems to emulate or get a stronger computer. 01-25-2019, 01:28 AM

I don't have another computer, that one is my best. I would change the backend but I have no idea how or even what that is. (01-24-2019, 08:22 PM)JMC47 Wrote: 1.2 GHz processor is a really bad sign. I guess framing it as only a 1.2 GHz processor isn't accurate, as the newer macs have something called turbo boost that it uses for high performance things like video games. It can turbo boost to somewhere up to 3.5 GHz i think? also, this is the only game i've had with such low speed. the other games i've tried were consistently between 80%-100%. 01-25-2019, 02:49 AM
Your Intel Core-M CPU, while it has Turbo boost, is in a fan-less Macbook chassis. Which means, once the chip gets hot (like when playing Dolphin), there's no way to dissipate excess heat quickly except by thermal throttling, aka sticking you back at your stock clocks or lower, meaning that you aren't getting the benefit of the Turbo boost. Which means you're stuck at really low clock speeds, thus impacting Dolphin performance.
Different games in Dolphin have different loads, and some are more demanding than others. Radiant Dawn is one of those games that's more demanding to play than say, NSMB or Melee. To change the backend, go to Dolphin Graphics options, and check out the drop-down where it says Backend. Change that to MoltenVK (only available in the latest dev builds) |
