Yeah. I saw it too today. I thought I wouldn't be surprised, but I'm glad I was wrong.
FrostBite 3 is a great improvement over 2. The destructive environments are vastly improved with the particles and debris flying everywhere. (Hopefully it'll be just as good in multiplayer)
The explosions caught me off guard. They finally look amazing.
It also looks like they finally nailed the lighting.

I like how they finally use high resolution textures for pretty much everything (afaics on the compressed video).

It's also rumored that BF4 might feature sea warfare.

So far I'm pretty interested.

Is there nothing we can do to stop this recent surge in on-rails cinematic fps?

Rant: (Show Spoiler)
This looks exactly the same as BF3 (gameplay wise) and slightly better graphics wise. The graphics still feature washed out colors and over the top lens flare effects.

This is another "cinematic fps" where you move down linear corridors from action setpiece to action setpiece firing at waves of retarded enemies that run straight at you. And of course constant cutscenes interrupting the gameplay to show you ridiculous action scenes and cliches that remind you of the horrible action B movies of the 80s.

Everyone is acting like a complete idiot on both sides and not using even the most basic tactics or logic. The marines remove what little cover they have in the room (the wood boards on the windows) and reveal their location to the enemy. The enemy after spotting them runs directly at their fortified position one at a time through a wide open street. The enemy helicopter tailgates your car 8 feet away giving you the perfect opportunity to shoot them instead of obliterating you from a safe distance like any attack helicopter pilot would. The huey circles the 4 marines on the ground (who are in great peril and are carrying important Intel) around a perfect landing spot and then asks them to fight their way through a nearby unstable building filled with enemies to reach the roof for an evac. The Huey doesn't ask the marines to take down the enemy helicopter that is chasing them even though one of the marines is clearly carrying an rpg launcher and instead they let themselves be destroyed by it. Earlier the huey calls out heat signatures and then asks you for targets. You can obviously see them why are you asking the marines where they are! And don't even get me started on the cliches.

I could go on but I won't. This is poor writing used to try and create a constant sense of danger and excitement without applying any thought towards realism. I can't take any of this seriously. Of course if you can't write something semi-realistic you can always go for a comedic style instead which allows you do over the top things without breaking immersion but of course they won't do that because modern fps have to be "super serious". BC2 had a tolerable campaign mainly because of the lack of a serious tone and the dialogue, which tried to be lighthearted and funny sometimes instead of just overly dramatic all the time.

As far as the level goes it follows the same tired old formula used in nearly all of the infantry levels in BF3. You're sent to get something, enemies show up, some evil foreign troops show up, you have to evac, and the evac site isn't safe so you to cover/escort your allies to a better site. They will likely throw in some on-rails ground vehicle/naval vehicle/aircrtaft segments for some levels where you take the gunner position and shoot red (or white) Xs instead of actually being able to fly/drive the vehicle.

And don't forget the QTEs! "Press X to kill the bad guy". The level design is heavily restricted by the use of constant action setpieces and cutscenes but they have apparently decided that gameplay is the last thing they should be concerned about. And of course it will have the same plot/story quality as a terrible action movie.

How did it come to this? Crysis 2, Crysis 3, Medal of Honor, Medal of Honor: Warfighter, the entire CoD franchise after CoD 2, BF3, BF4, god only knows what other franchises I'm forgetting have been ruined by this disease of cinematic cutscenes and non-interactive gameplay. Everything is about showing off the graphics and animations. It feels like a bad movie with some basic gameplay shoved inbetween the scenes at the last minute or order to be able to call it a video game. This kind of stuff isn't fun to play so why is so god damn popular all of the sudden? Why must every fps franchise be turned into this? I can only think of two rationale explanatios. That EA is simply trying to copy the success of CoD by copying the CoD formula itself in all of their fps. Or that the VFX industry is expanding at such an enormous rate that the video game industry has simply become flooded with graphics artists looking for jobs. And as such their aren't enough programmers and writers to keep up with all of the artists.

Now I'm even beginning to see these horrible mechanics in other titles from other publishers. And I hope this fad dies before it gets any stronger.

Edit: Paragraphs. Happy Garteal?
