The second episode (The Adventure of Link) looks like Super Mario. The first one is different. Of course it may look outdated (it surely is) but it's a really excellent game. Gotta try it and play one or two hours at least to really get into it

After playing the adventure of link I continue to think that all 2D rpgs and action/adventure games should be top-down perspective. Any other perspective makes large scale exploration unfeasible and uninteresting.

Fixed.
No. Not all 2D RPG, action-adventure games should be top-down.
There are plenty of side-scrollers which are 'interesting' to explore. I'm not sure what games you've been playing.

Valkyrie Profile
E.V.O: Search For Eden
Illusion of Gaia

Some others weren't so hot, can't recall them atm. In terms of exploration, Valkyrie Profile hands-down had the largest world to offer. Some levels like Lezard's Tower and the Black Tower are multilayered (with front, middle, and back sections) in addition to having multiple floors. It'd be easy to get lost without the game's map, and you can forget about seeing every nook and cranny in your first playthrough.

I've only heard of Illusions of Gaia in passing among fellow RPG fans, but my friend introduced me to E.V.O. way back when. It might not be a great game by today's standards, but it was interesting, innovative, and the world felt large and ever-changing. It was cool to see your creature, the world, and the story evolving at the same pace.

Illusion of Gaia is actually a top-down RPG.

Adding to Shonumi's list:
Battle of the Olympus (NES)
Faxandu (NES)
Actraiser 1&2 (SNES)
Metroid (NES) & Super Metroid (SNES)
Castlevania (NES/SNES/PSX/GBA)

These are just what I thought of on the spot. I'm sure I've missed plenty more.

Also, I saw you purchased Cave Story+, that too is a pretty good adventure game from what I've played.

Oops. This is what happens when you don't check your sources Wink Stupid friends.

I think the 2D Metroid games are prime examples of good exploration in side scrolling games. Never played a Castelvania game, but I have every Metroid game except for Prime 3 and the pinball game.

Holy !@#$, Dark Souls 2 announced for PC/PS3/360!
I'm glad to see that they're also considering a PC release. Looks like it sold really well.

Thanks for the link Zee.
