Despite the thread title I am serious. You can make a killing on the Steam community marketplace if you are competitive and price items just right to ensure they get bought. I got a salvaged drop today which I managed to sell on the community marketplace for $13.25 in my Steam wallet. Basically idle for weapons, craft weapons into metal, trade metal for keys or backpack expanders. On the marketplace check what the lowest price is for the item on the market that you intend to sell and sell slightly under that. I usually price my keys around $1.80 - $1.85 and backpack expanders around $3.95 - $4, sometimes a bit more and manage to sell them. If TF2WH had keys I could cash in all my credits for keys or backpack expanders, sell them on the community marketplace and get at least $200 in my Steam wallet should all the items sell. At the moment I have $32.77 in my Steam wallet just from selling keys and a couple salvaged crates.

Now we just need to find a way to turn cash in your Steam wallet to cash in your real wallet...

This is getting ridiculous with this game. As far as I know this is supposed to be a fun game to play and not about idling around and turning the game into a small Steam business. At this point I think it's like, you need to find something else to do with yourself.

Yeah. Sad

But I have an idea. I am purchasing games that are on sale and may try selling them for money via Paypal on TF2Outpost. My only gripe with that is it opens the floodgates for scammers. I may even hold a private raffle for some games.

Obviously you're free to completely disregard what I just said, but it seems detrimental to the game if at some point all the game ends up being is players waiting around for game items so that they can gather them all up and make a profit. Granted it's nice to get free stuff, but all you end up doing is whoring out the game and kinda destroying it.

I don't see the philosophy behind this. I mean, TF is free to play, so you're basically earning free credits to spend on the store, what's in it for Valve letting things be this way?

I think to take full advantage of things people want being given to you free by valve, you need to have bought a hat/gun etc with real money in the past.

I'm not sure what you mean? When you sell an item via the community market other players purchase it with real money which goes to your Steam Wallet. Steam Wallet funds can only be spent on Steam so Valve wins regardless and are not really losing anything. It's not exactly free for me in the sense I had to spend $5 for each account I wanted to upgrade to premium else I couldn't trade or sell dropped items.

Spending time and mental energy to get money is always a constructive use of time.

Most players aren't going to bother investing all the time and research needed to set this kind of thing up. I sure as hell don't care enough to do it. Not to mention it requires financial investment to set up alt accounts (you need to pay to upgrade them to premium status before you can trade their items to your main account). This limits the number of players who do it.

This "whoring" as you call it has created a strong in-game economy that has kept the game going and increased the number of active players.

It's like having a second job (or third in some people's case). But it's not for everyone.

@Xtreme

Couldn't you just buy steam games with the money then sell the games?

Yes but I would be taking a huge risk that opens the door to scammers. Considering the minimum amount to fund your Steam wallet is $5, I've spent $150 just to upgrade all accounts. Done right it could be profitable and I am not referring to the greedy trader mentality. Those with 100+ accounts drop around 2 - 3 salvaged crates weekly or bi-weekly which can be sold on the marketplace for $13 - $15 a pop, then there are weapons that can be crafted into metal and traded for keys and backpack expanders that can be sold for $1.80+ per key or $4+ for expanders.

With the money I could manage to snag games cheap when on sale then sell for a small profit after the sale is over. Trading games/items for Paypal money would work but it's just dealing with scammers that deters me from going that route. Plus everyone is going to want you (me) to have some kind of rep else they won't go first which puts me at risk of being scammed. I honestly don't think I will bother with any more than 30 accounts for a while just because it's a pain to idle them not to mention taking away resources if I want to play another game, that is where having a spare box would be nice though. Even nicer if there was some script to auto-start idle accounts, run for ten hours and auto-shutdown and start the next batch.
