@Zee530
The name of the game is based on the plot. Not the gameplay mechanics. But either way the wind waker is still the instrument that link uses to play all of his songs and therefore it is extremely important to both. Regardless of the fact that he no longer needs it to perform one of its many duties once you reach a certain point in the game. The only difference is we no longer need to spend massive amounts of time traveling instead of actually playing the game for no good reason. It still takes time to travel the process is just simpler and quicker than before. So it's no longer being artificially inflated. This is a good thing. Especially considering this was the biggest point of criticism of the original game from both critics and users. The other big thing people complained about was the triforce fetch quest which felt like a horribly out of place timesink to pad the game out. This too is being compromised on rather than completely eliminated. @Starscream You said it was stupid and contradictory to the gameplay elements. So what else could you possibly mean by that? Because I'm not seeing any other interpretation. Perhaps you would like to clarify your position beyond "it's stupid". @ExtremeDude2 I was talking about both. Their logic reminded me of the things I used to hear from the long time players of eve online. It's like a disease. Once you play the game for a certain amount of time you begin to somehow see the obvious flaws as some kind of valuable mechanic. And you begin to protect it like it's some kind of inherited cultural value. When in reality it's just the developers realizing they don't have enough content to keep people entertained for too long so they pad it out by filling in the spots between content with very long travel time. Wind waker is nowhere near as bad as eve online in this regard though. It can be hours sometimes in the case of eve online. You probably spend 90% of the game traveling or otherwise waiting for something to happen. In both games though you spend a lot of time staring at your ship floating across space/ocean doing nothing. It's not exactly a fun or engaging experience. You're just waiting to get to your destination with the promise of more fun when you arrive. It should be recognized as what it is. A flaw in video game design and an excuse for padding. In an open world game traveling is important because it lets you explore and see the world around you more as you progress through the games plot. And I'm sure that's what they were going for here. But there is no reason not to make shortcuts available later in the game when you end up backtracking. Or speed the process up so it doesn't take so long that you end up feeling like you're waiting rather than exploring. I really like these changes. It seems like they are directly acting on the criticisms the original game received to improve the game. Of course there will always be backlash from the small number of "hardcore" players that believe that any and all change is bad.

How about this: Using the Wind Waker to open certain doors is stupid and a waste of time, why not just forget the WW altogether and just press one button to open the door?
How about this: Going through the game and finding items is boring and stupid, how about we just give you all of the items at the beginning of the game so you don't have to do anything at all? How about this: Going through dungeons is stupid and boring, how about we just put you at the end boss so you don't have to go through all of that hassle? How about this: Forget putting you at the end boss, why not just put you at the end of the game credits so that you don't have to play through the game at all? If you want to make the game easier for yourself, make it easier on yourself and don't play the game to begin with. Some people are only interested in playing the game how it was originally intended, and I'm one of those people.

Surely you see the difference between engaging activities that require player input and thought process (which are fun) and holding a single button for long lengths of time while you stare at an almost static image (which is not fun). Cutting down travel time is not about making the game easier. It doesn't make the game easier at all. It just allows you to spend more of your time on engaging activities like dungeons and boss fights. This is the same reason that fetch quests are pretty much universally recognized as bad gameplay design. They don't require any thought or challenge, they're just horribly time consuming in order to pad the game.
Video games are supposed to be about interaction and feedback. That's what makes them unique and fun as a medium. These traits are recognized by both game reviewers and game developers as positive traits.

Personally, I enjoyed the sea segments, not because they were good game aspects (they're not) but they were the perfect time to just zone out. I know it breaks the game-user interaction, but I guess I'm just the type of person who can stare at a screen for a while and zone out (I do this a lot with CNN)
That said, I think the changes are improvements. Though once you learn the Cyclone song or.whatever, it's not like sea travel is a big deal time-wise anyway. 08-30-2013, 02:21 PM
A few things to note about the sail:
-it's completely optional. If you like the old way, play the old way. Don't go to the auction and buy it. Even if you get the sail, you don't have to use it; you press "A" while sailing to activate it when you want, almost like a turbo mode. -it doesn't come in until a substantial amount of sailing has already been done. You'll get your taste of the slow paced, wind shifting traveling at the start. I personally see nothing good about using the wind waker when sailing; maybe if it's a straight shot, going all the way across the map in one direction it's not so bad, but trying to maneuver around treasure chests, fighting ships, or bombing platforms gets really annoying when you can only turn about 45 degrees before losing all momentum. You still have to use the wind waker to use the deku leaf, possess other characters, or to warp, so it's not as if it's obsolete. 08-30-2013, 08:24 PM
