There are two main advantages of HDR, not just the one that May keeps pointing out. There's a wider range of colour, so things can be brighter and darker, but within a given range of colour, there are also more distinct levels. The subset of an HDR gamut which corresponds to SRGB's gamut has more colours, so there's maybe some potential to add partial support in the same way as forcing 24-bit colour on lower-bit-depth games. This isn't likely to make the game look suddenly amazingly better, but might reduce banding slightly.
