Faron Woods trial beginning - skyward sword

So I've been playing through skyward sword and got to the first of the three trials, not long after you get the harp. I've learned the faron woods song and played it in the right place in the province. I now have to 'thrust' my sword downwards. However, I am playing on an xbox controller due to a broken wii motion plus attachment. I have experienced no issues with my current controls up until now, how can config my controller/keyboard to overcome this or any other work arounds.
