game runs smooth when it works but it randomly crashes. sometimes after 20 minutes sometimes after 2 hours. its VERY annoying to be in the middle of playing and then all of a sudden dolphin stops working. anybody have any suggestions how to find a solution?

Try the latest Dolphin development revision. I remember seeing issues with 4.0 - 4.0.2 where XAudio2 would get "unloaded" or whatever. Shouldn't be a problem now though.
