Parents, ha ha what do they know about technology and building computers anyway?
If you're confident then you shouldn't let them stop you from building.

The opposite in fact, they should be proud of your skills and hobby and embrace you, encourage you.

Building is quite an easy task but with two small siblings running around it is a little bit trickier (luckily, I was the youngest and started to build when I was 23) so I have never experienced this.
Building also requires concentration, patience and silence and some meditation.

What can be done is that you give some money to mom and dad, ask them to take the two rug rats out for McDonald's and happy meals while you assemble the computer safely at home.

My dad is fine, but my mom is stuck in the 90s in terms of computer building. 'there's a lot of soldering involved,' .Wtf lol
I also needed to get my priorities back in order, because I planned on at least getting a job by the end of the summer, and I lost sight of it. That and i still have to get my driving permit.
Also, there is no way the mcdonalds plan would work, cause my family is poor-ish.D:

Even in the 90s it was still no more difficult than building a lego kit.

One of two things will likely happen:

1. You'll eventually convince them that they are being irrational (unlikely). And probably chip in some money from your job.

2. You'll have to wait until you're on your own and financially stable to do it, which will be awhile.

Actually gaming desktops are usually cheaper (they just have a broader price range). And you get A LOT more performance per dollar from a desktop.

You know that $700 desktop you just designed? I promise you that you won't be able to find a gaming laptop anywhere near that powerful no matter how expensive it is.

I don't see how the siblings would be a problem for the same reason that I don't see how it would prevent you from owning an armored vehicle. If you took one look at my case and tried to lift it you would have trouble figuring out how a toddler and/or child could possibly damage it in any way (it has locks so even if they tried to get inside they couldn't). If you put it on top of a desk I don't see how they could get liquid inside of it.

I ran into this same problem when I was your age. My parents tried to get me to accept a prebuilt desktop/laptop but I persisted in saying "no, I want to build my own, end of story, I'de rather have no computer than a prebuilt system". It never worked until my cousin who had built several computers and was generally regarding as the familes tech wiz offered to guide me through the process, only then did my parents agree. So basically I got lucky. But here I am 5 years later with the same system (granted MOST of the parts have been upgraded by now) in college as an ENGINEERING MAJOR. Now I build stuff all the time that would have freaked my parents out.

Yep, but I also figured something out...I already have two desktops (that I could only upgrade the graphics card, ram and hard drive because my mom doesn't want to upgrade the processor, because of the processor being hard to reach already.), both of which that BARELY run Smash Bros. Melee/Brawl, Zelda Wind Waker, New Super Mario Bros., and some WiiWare, but can do SOME justice. When I get a job and save the money, I would then get an EPIC laptop (Sandy Bridge Core I5, dedicated graphics and a s**tload of ram.), and then since my parent's main thing about me building a computer is that I have to have my own room first, because currently I am sharing a room with my two little brothers (my cousin has her own room, and we are living in a 3 bedroom house, sorry if I am giving you a mouthful of info, it is because of my Autism and I feel I have to explain everything completely). Also another main factor is that my youngest brother and my cousin are basically Bonnie and Clyde, Thing 1 and Thing 2, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, and so on and so forth. That is why...(Sorry, again, excuse me.D: )

But when I move into a bigger house, things would be alright and Ivy Bridge would be out by then, right? (Around a year from now, IDK) I know what you are saying, but for right now I feel the laptop is a good idea, since it will probably not leave the house anyways. And I can always snatch a great deal off of NewEgg. (Yup! You've turned me into a believer! Big Grin)

When I still had the thought of building a desktop in my mind, I was thinking of just buying parts gradually, but then again Thing 1 and Thing 2 would get into it...

I am glad that there is someone that was on the same boat as me...thanks. If I try to discuss about me building a computer, she would say..

YOUR ARGUMENT IS INVALID. NOW GO ON...

And that would be the end of it... Sad

Other than that, again, THANKS. AngelSmile

I would expect autism to do the exact opposite, make you less talkative. If elaborating on everything to the highest possible degree is an autistic trait then I must be one of the most autistic people in the world....

Autism can actually be a good if you use that obsessive behavior for something useful. Some of the best programmers I have ever met either had autism or aspergers (I don't think I spelled that right).

Stop that. Your post is nowhere near long and these types of posts are a refreshing change from the legions of "my dolphin broke how do I fix!?!?" posts that make me want to beat the poster to death with an iron rod while screaming at them "use the search function you lazy piece of f**k". Seriously, elaborating with back story is not a bad thing at all.

I would not advise doing it in stages. No matter how long it takes save up the money to do it all at once. Buying parts that you're just going to end up replacing a year from then is a waste of money unless it's something like a video card that consistently gets much better every year.

It was the same way for me growing up. Dad was fine with it, mom freaked out anytime I mentioned I wanted to build something electronic (the big two being my desktop and my speakers). All I can say is things will get better if you use patience.

Yes Ivy Bridge will be out by then.

By the way not all great PC games require a powerful system. I have lots of friends with shitty computers that do just fine with older games as well as some very fun modern games (minecraft for example).

Ivy Bridge will kick some serious butt once it released.
I'm looking forward to it a lot.
Next year maybe they have some nice 4-6GB GPU's to go along with it too.

To be more specific, I have Aspergers, and people with Aspergers tend to be medium-functioning to high functioning, and I am the latter, not to mention I also have ADHD as well.

Also, I've used my obsession with video games to connect to the outside world in ways that are thought, at least by my peers, family and teachers, not possible by an Autistic person. I was obsessed with Sonic for A WHILE, but after playing Brawl, I went on researching and playing the games with those respective characters in that day. I also am obsessed with drawing, at first with Sonic and then to Mario and then to anime, in which I am awesome at. I plan to be either the person that makes the designs for characters in video games or a 3D animator, but I'm leaning towards the latter right now.

Agreed. But I would like to have something that can render animations in Blender well too, so I can get an Ivy Bridge for that, and just use the laptop for Dolphin/PCSX2.

Yup! It would do some justice in Blender, Gimp(Gimp lol, but for super-high res. stuff and 5 million layers), Flash, Vegas, After Effects, the list is endless.

So for right now, I'll get a Sandy Bridge gaming laptop, and then later I could build an Ivy Bridge computer for school projects (I have a 3d Animation class at my school), and Dolphin/PCSX2 when I don't feel like using my laptop.

If you read my sig, the computers I've used with Dolphin (Both of them under the same roof and both of them are mine) are old, and as a result I at first wanted to get a gaming laptop. But then again, there are countless things wrong with those so I decided to do something new. I was going to learn how to build a computer, but due to family problems, I could not build this, so feel free to use this as a model and change parts to your liking as such.
