Hi all

I've done a search on Google and on here and I can't get a clear answer. I've got the Wii shop working on Dolphin using the network guide, however I need to get a copy of my NAND so that I can download all my Wii games for use on Dolphin. However I copied my Wii over to my Wii U and now my account is tied into the Wii U. I've seen that bootmii is used to dump the NAND when using the Wii, but this doesn't work with vWii/Wii U.

Has anyone got a straight forward answer with regards to if dumping Wii NANDs from the Wii U is possible? If it's not, that's fine I'll just have to forget about getting my Wii Ware & VC games on Dolphin Sad .

You'll need to hack your Wii U first, if you need to dump your vWii. It is just about identical to the normal Wii's NAND (except for some IOSs that are used for utilising the Wii U hardware, which will need to be replaced in order for it to run on Dolphin). The procedure for hacking your Wii U is different from that of hacking your Wii console.

  1. Download Wii U Homebrew Launcher, extract it and put the files onto the root of the SD card
  2. Download Homebrew App Store, extract it and put the Homebrew App Store folder into the wiiu folder
  3. Download Dump Mii NAND and merge the apps folder with the one on the root of the SD card
  4. Download the BootMii files needed for running HBC
  5. Run the web browser exploit using the web browser on your Wii U (by using a web address, such as http://www.wiiubru.com/go/ ) to launch the Homebrew Launcher, it will only stay in volatile RAM, so it will disappear after restarting the console, until you run the exploit again
  6. Using the Homebrew App Store, download HBL2HBC (Homebrew Launcher 2 Homebrew Channel)
  7. Use HBL2HBC and you'll boot into the Homebrew Channel
  8. Select Dump Mii NAND, and dump your vWii NAND from there.
Alternatively, you can also download FSDumper, which can dump the files within the NAND all decrypted.

Except this vWii NAND doesn't work in Dolphin... Wii U vWii uses Wii U specific hooks which are not emulated in Dolphin because Dolphin is not a Wii U emulator.

Interesting, I did not know that there were special vWii/Wii U specific versions of IOS. I assumed the Wii U's OS did all of the work getting the vWii set up. I've read a little bit about Wii U homebrew/hacking, but I hadn't read about that. Can anyone link any specifics on the topic? That would be appreciated.

I'll bet that there aren't many significant changes to the vWii's version of IOS and the NAND that are specifically dependent on Wii U hardware or software to any major degree. Can anyone weigh in on the feasibility of getting the vWii NAND dump working in Dolphin in the future?

I know about issues with softmodding your vWii with a realWii IOS58 (I think it was) that would brick your vWii, so they had to create a new one that was compatible with vWii because the vWii hooks into the CafeIOS. There is a whole thread on GBAtemp about it if I'm not mistaken.

Uh, that's not really correct. CafeOS (the OS running on the PPC) isn't running at that point, and the Starbuck is running vWii IOS, not Wii U's IOS (nicknamed IOSU). A vWii IOS is just a regular Wii IOS but with some minor changes, such as a different PPC bootstrap process, new hardware drivers (e.g. for Wi-Fi) and some DMCU stuff (to replace VI transparently).

WiiBrew, WiiUBrew, and the fail0verflow blog are all good reads.

That may already be working, since most of the differences are within IOS and we currently only HLE the Starlet and IOS. The vWii System Menu may not work though, since it reportedly talks to some Wii U hardware.

WiiBrew unfortunately doesn't make any mention of the virtual Wii Mode, and WiiUBrew doesn't make any mention of virtual Wii Mode IOS. They don't say much about how Wii Mode works besides that a number of ways of hacking it that worked on the Wii doesn't work in Wii Mode.

It would be interesting to see if it worked for sure in Dolphin.

WiiBrew has tons of information about the Wii (obviously) and most of them apply just fine to the vWii mode.

WiiUBrew does have info about the Wii mode (though not vWii IOS specifically -- no one seems to have written about them much, apart from the f0f people...): legacy hardware registers, titles, MCP (which is the equivalent of IOS's ES, sort of). This is all assuming you're already familiar with Wii's IOS.

Here's a pretty good resource (imo): https://fail0verflow.com/media/30c3-slides/
